The Worship Design Studio with Dr. Marcia McFee

The Advent Door is a blog created by artist Jan Richardson. In it, she uses original artwork, poetry and scriptural reflections to deepen our engagement on the lectionary texts for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. Each of her blog entries for this year's lectionary selections also contain links to her previous reflections on past years texts.

Use Jan's multi-sensory take on the images, ideas, and themes that make the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany season an especially rich time for contemplation to fuel your ideas for worship this season. Or draw on them for an advent educational forum. Or explore them with your worship team to make the season more enriching for you and your congregation.

Jan is an artist, writer, and ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. She serves as director of The Wellspring Studio, LLC, and travels widely as a retreat leader and conference speaker. Known for her distinctive intertwining of word and image, Jan's work has attracted an international audience drawn to the welcoming and imaginative spaces that she creates in her books, online blogs, and public events.

Jan's Advent Door resources include art, poetry and reflections on the feast day of la Virgen de Guadalupe as well.

"The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe invites us to keep our eyes open for the variety of guises in which the sacred shows up. This day beckons us, too, to be mindful of our connections with sisters and brothers of the global church. On this day I am asking myself, To a world in which God is laboring to be born, what difference does my Advent journey make? And what wisdom might the Mother of God have to offer me about that?"

Check out her wonderful reflections on Winter Solstice too! She includes ideas for a "Longest Night" or "Blue Christmas" service during Advent for those who are having a difficult time during the holidays or simply need to acknowledge some pain or loss they are carrying in the midst of this season of celebration.

Longest Night ? Jan L. Richardson

...This blessing does not mean to take the night away but it knows its hidden roads, knows the resting spots along the path, knows what it means to travel in the company of a friend.

So when this blessing comes, take its hand. Get up. Set out on the road you cannot see...
