The Chinese New Year is determined by the 2nd new moon after winter solstice. The Chinese celebrate by letting off firecrackers to scare away evil spirits.
In Portugal and Spain, the people pick and eat twelve grapes from a bunch just as the clock strikes twelve on New Year's Eve. This tradition is said to ensure twelve happy months in the coming year.
In many places the coming of the new year is celebrated by singing the traditional Scottish song "Auld Lang Syne". The translation is "old long ago".
In the U.S., the coming of the New Year is celebrated by dropping the gigantic crystal ball in Times Square in New York City. The ball came about as a result of a ban on fireworks. The first one in 1907, was an illuminated 700pound iron and wood ball adorned with 100 light bulbs. Today it is designed by Waterford Crystal, weighs 11,875 lbs., is 12 feet in diameter and is bedazzled with 2,668 Waterford crystals. Throughout the year visitors to Times Square write their New Year's wishes on pieces of official new year's eve confetti. At the end of the year, the wishes are collected and added to the one ton of confetti that showers the crowd gathered in Times Square.
The Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. In the Jewish new year celebration apples and honey are eaten to symbolize a sweet new year.
In Italy, people wear red underwear to bring good luck in the coming year.

Intramural Girls Basketball
Girls intramural basketball begins February 3rd. All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls welcome! No experience necessary.
The season will be six weeks long with games or practices generally four afternoons a week. There are no intramural activities on Wednesdays. Practices and games run from 3:15 to 4:30. Students are responsible for their own transportation home.
All players must have a physical on file which will be good for two years. A district sports physical form, a registration form, and a $50 fee must be turned in to the office. Both forms are located in the office. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Southmayd at 503.655.3636.

Daily News
Is your child forgetting to let you know about up-coming daily or weekly events? Log on to our website for the Kraxberger Daily News. Go to: gladstone.k12.or.us., click on the link on the left to Kraxberger Middle School, then click on News, and finally Daily News.
Phone Calls:
On a daily basis, many students use the school phones to call home. Please remind your student to leave you a message when they call. Often times parents will see that they have received a call from the school number and will call the office back. Because there are over 50 phones in the building, most of the time office staff won't know who called or why.
It would also be helpful if you listen to your messages before you call the school back. Chances are, you know way more than we do!
Backpack Buddy Program Food Drive
The Backpack Buddy Program provides children from John Wetten and Kraxberger schools with weekend meals during the school year. Local businesses, civic groups, churches, and individuals help collect kid-friendly nonperishable food. The children receive a bag of food to help support the makings of a meal for the family for a weekend. Donations are especially helpful for these families during the holidays.
Donation boxes are located in the main office of each school. Thank you for your continued donations! If you are interested in donating money or time, or if you have any questions about the program, please contact Angela Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator for the Gladstone School District, 503-656-6564.
Thank you for helping us to keep this worthwhile program alive in Gladstone!
