Celebrate the first day of winter with an amazing winter wonderland showcasing the splendor of the season. Games, crafts, activities and winter treats can all be a part of this special day.

Getting Started:

? Post event sign

? Purchase Snowflake themed table cloths

? Hang snowflakes in the Creation Station, lobby or center play area to create a winter feel

? Have these items on hand:

? Sugar cubes ? Insta-Snow ( Discount School Supply) ? Hot Cocoa ? Wax Paper Sheets (Ice Skating) ? Marshmallows ? Shaving Cream ? Coffee Filters

? Reading Resources ? The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats ? The Mitten by Jan Brett ? Llama, Llama Home with Mama by Anna Dewdney

Sweet Tortilla Snowflakes

Materials: Teacher Prep:

? Flour Tortillas (warm in microwave for a few minutes) ? Powdered Sugar ? Canola or vegetable oil for baking ? Edible glitter (optional) ? Toaster Oven ? Kitchen scissors

? Demonstrate folding the tortilla in half, then in quarters ? It should look like a wedge shape ? Demonstrate cutting shapes like you would with a paper

Child's Process:

? Fold Tortilla ? Cut shapes to create a snowflake ? Bake in oven for 4 min-or until lightly brown ? Sprinkle with powdered sugar

Holiday Pretzel Treats

? Waffle Shaped ? Hershey's Kisses or Hershey's Hugs ? M&M's ? Toaster Oven

Teacher prep:

? Provide materials

Child's Process:

? Layer a kiss on top of your pretzel ? Bake for 4-6 min on 170 ? Remove and quickly place an M&M on top of the kiss ? Chill in the refrigerator for 10 minutes ? Enjoy!

Notes:

? Fill a small Ziploc Bag with ? dozen to take home.

Glittery Window Clings

? Cookie Sheet ? Wax Paper ? Paper Snowflake template ? Puffy Glitter Fabric paint (squeeze bottles)

Teacher Prep:

? Provide materials

Child's Process:

? Place a paper template on the cookie sheet ? Cover with wax paper ? Squeeze the paint to along the lined template to create a

snowflake connecting all the lines

? Allow time to dry overnight ? Peel from the wax paper and apply to a window

Notes:

? Older children may enjoy free painting their snowflake

Winter Sun Catcher

Materials: Teacher's Prep: Child's Process:

? Contact Paper (2 per child) ? Berries, cloves, twigs, pine needles, seasonal potpourri ? String ? Hole punch

? Cut 8 ? x 11 sheets of contact paper ? Provide materials

? Peel the back off 1 sheet of contact paper ? Lay on the table sticky side up ? Arrange items on paper ? Cover with contact paper ? Punch two holes at the top ? Tie string and hang in a window
