And The Award Goes To…
By Jessica, Juliet, Michael and Shannon
School is about learning and striving to reach goals. School is also about celebrating those who strive to reach the highest goals, and who are enthusiastic to learn everyday. Edison Park is hosting their 7th annual awards assembly in the gym at the end of the day on Friday, February 10th, with grades three through eight in the gym. At the end of two quarters, Edison Park has an annual awards assembly where various award are given out.
As always, the awards given out will be High Honors, Honors, Perfect Attendance, and Extra Effort. To receive the High Honors award, a student must have a 3.5 to 4.0 grade point average. To receive the Honors award, a student needs to have a 3.0 to 3.49 grade point average. To receive the Perfect Attendance award, a student must have come to school every day school is in session, all day without being tardy, for that half of the year. To receive the Extra Effort award, a student must think out of the box for assignments and do more work than expected or needed of that student. There are normally multiple students from each class who receive each award. Mr. Z and Ms. McMahon are always extremely proud to see how well their students are excelling in school.
“I am never surprised to see how many awards our students receive because we have amazing kids here at EP, but I always feel very happy and proud see how well our students do.” Mr. Z told the Howler, regarding the awards assembly. “Even though the amount of awards given out decreases as the grade level increases. Edison Park is still a wonderful school and it just goes to show that we have fabulous teachers who work hard to challenge our students.”
The awards assembly is where the Edison Park students get a chance to shine. So parents and siblings make sure to come and congratulate those special students who walk into school every day!
“Chip” Wrecked
By: Ian, Val, and Eva, 7th
Alvin, Simon, Theodore..., Alvin? ALVIN! The Chipmunks and the Chipettes are back and this time their “chip” wrecked.
In this episode the cast goes on a cruise for a vacation. While the chipmunks are goofing around, the ship crashes into an island. The chipmunks get lost there and Dave needs to rescue them.
It stars Jason Lee as Dave Seville and David Cross as Ian Hawke. Justin Long is the voice of Alvin, Matthew Gray Gubler speaks for Simon, and Jesse McCartney talks as Theodore.
This movie came out on December sixteenth, 2011 and was an instant hit. On its opening day it made $ 6,700,000, opening weekend it received $ 23,244,744 and $ 111,585,367 has been earned so far.
People should see this movie because of the songs performed. Such as: Party Rock Anthem, Bad Romance, Whip my Tail (hair), and others.
Comedic events make this movie memorable, like the different conversations between the chipmunks and humans.
Some unexpected problems arise such as a new side of the chipmunks that has not yet been seen. Where as their movies is the normal urban setting, this movie transitions to a cruise ship, and into a jungle environment.
The Howler gives the movie three paws up and offers some opinions on the film.
Eva: “I think the animation was excellent, as were the actors were very good also. It must have been difficult to do a movie with characters that aren’t really there. I was entertained with the movie! ”
Val: “I enjoyed the movie but at times their voices got annoying because they were high pitched.”
Ian: “I was satisfied with this movie, and enjoyed it from start to finish. This was because of the comedy between each of the chipmunks.”

Now showing…. Boys Basketball!
By: Cassidy, Ethan, Grace, and Julia
The boy’s basketball team has been working this season with the help of their loyal fans and coaches. When both teams won their first game, The Howler was interested in knowing their secret. As The Howler approached the coaches and a few players they were astonished how much they loved basketball.
As we approached Kevin Culen and Ethan Ryan from the 5th /6th basketball team, we discovered that basketball is a lot of fun because you get to be with friends and shoot some hoops! Kevin Culen, a 6th grader here at Edison Park, plays a shooting guard and almost always makes the basket! Ethan Ryan also a 6th grader, plays shooting guard. The team relies on everyone’s hard work and dedication to their team.
After catching up with the coaches, Mr. Z, Mrs. Carman, and Ms. Schroeder, The Howler was able to ask some important questions about both the both boys basketball teams. The Howler found out on average there are about eight or nine boys on the 7th /8th team, and about twelve or thirteen boys on the 5th /6th team. Many may know that organizing a sports team can be challenging, but Mr. Z knows how to do it very well. Mr. Z makes a schedule for each practice that each boy needs to follow and offers his support to each team member.
Come on out and show your school spirit and cheer on the Edison Park wolves boys basketball team at the next game. GO WOLVES!
Cloud Gate
By: Eddie, Eli, Eric, Michaela, and Sienna
The name Cloud Gate might sound very foreign to Chicagoans. This is probably because most people refer to the popular structure in Millennium Park as “The Bean”. Many people don not know much about this intriguing sculpture.
The Indian-born British artist, Anish Kapoor created The Bean in 2004. It is called Cloud Gate because it reflects the skyline and the clouds of Chicago and people can walk under the gate-like structure. It is referred to as “The Bean” because it resembles a coffee been.
The Cloud Gate is an enormous structure. It was made out of one hundred ten tons of stainless steel plates over a fortified frame. It is sixty-six feet long and thirty-three feet high, making it one of the biggest outdoor structures. The piece is polished quite often in order to maintain in the futuristic appearance of liquid mercury. People come for far and wide to see and interact with The Bean. Kids love the fun house-mirror effect The Bean creates, while adults love the beauty of the reflected skyline. It appeals to people of all ages and is something everyone should see, in Millennium Park.
History fair:
The Inside Scoop
Sareena and Katie~ 7th
Is history fair really worth it? Should middle school students be able to voluntarily do history fair? Experts say it is a great educational experience for students to go through, but how do middle school students feel? This project is a great idea to help students be educated about Chicago’s historical background. Having it mandatory for the first year so students can see how comfortable they are with it is a good idea. The next year however, it as a volunteer project for those who enjoyed it this year. At Farnsworth, another Elementary school there is special clubs for students who are interested in the project idea. If Edison Park had a club for such projects kids would be able to make their own decisions on whether or not they want to join. Having seventh grade having 20 sources and eighth having 30 sources per person can become very overwhelming due to the fact that well that is a lot. Especially when smaller topics also known as seeds have to be chosen making it harder to find information. At least fifteen sources as a requirement seems like a fair limit as a minimum. This year’s theme is Revolution, Reaction, Reform. The official website for the Chicago history fair is . On the website there is a side bar that says History Fair. Then the theme poster is shown. You scroll down to the bottom of the page until you see the link that says “How to find topics in Chicago History.” This may be able to help others decide what their project should be. There are pros and cons to History Fair but it all come down to a student’s interest level. If a student are interested they will get more information on the topic chosen because they have to be passionate about it.

The Many Colors of the Republican Party
Andzelika, Austin, Joseph, and Kirk -7th
President Obama has many competitors in the presidential election, but to pick the most suited President the American people need to learn information about them. The candidates tell the people what they want to hear. However, away from the presidential debate there is more about theses candidates than meets the eye. One running candidate, age 76 Ron Paul, has exclusive background information that may not be known. When he was young he did not get things handed to him, he had to work for them at a dairy and as a paper boy. Before he went into politics he worked at a drug store with a medical degree from Duke University. He is running for this long race but not without experience. In high school he was student council president at Dormont high school. The Howler does not have the power to decide on who should run against President Obama, but this information should help those you can make a decision. Born on March 4th, 1950 in Paint Creek Texas, Rick Perry growing up on a ranch with his parents shows he has more than just political skills. He was a boy scout who achieved the rank of Eagle and then a cheerleader in college at A&M University in Texas. He had a bachelors’ degree in Animal Science. He then joined the Air force. In 1984 he was elected to the Texas House of Represenitives. He wrote 2 books called On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts are Worth Fighting for and Fed Up! Our Right to Save America from Washington. There are many politicians running for president be for voting citizens must know all the information about them, good and bad. The politicians say everything fine about them self, and all the horrific about the other politicians. One candidate is Mitt Romney born on March 12, 1957. Born in Detroit, Michigan. As Willard Mitt Romney. He went to school at Cranbrook, Brigham Young University, and Harvard. I do think he should run for Governor. Newt Gingrich was born on June 17, 1943 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He has 3 sisters named Candace, Susan and Roberta. His father was remarried after his father’s wife died. Newt Gingrich married Jackie Battley at the age of 19 and later they had a baby girl. Jackie died years later, and Newt was remarried to Marianne Ginther. He wanted to get new nuclear plants to reduce 2 billion tons of CO2 each year. He also wants to put green tax credits for tax loophole. The howler cannot decide on who should run against president Obama, but with this information it should help citizens to make a decision. Obama is going to have some tough competition this year.
Since this article has been written Rick Perry has dropped out of the race
Costa Concordia Disaster
By: Bart, Jeremy, Ryan, and Sebastian
A shocking voice recording from the Costa Concordia disaster reveals that the captain, Franchesco Schettino, was ordered to return to the ship he abandoned. He did not listen and rowed to shore in a stolen lifeboat with a couple of his senior officers! He should have had courage and gone back to the ship. On January 17, 2012 the death toll from the ship disaster rose to 11 people. The ship was said to have crashed into a coral reef making it sink.
Rescuers have found five more bodies but cannot identify them. Schettino was accused of manslaughter and has been placed under house arrest. He claims to be innocent, saying that he and his crew members were catapulted into the water. There is still over half a million gallons of fuel still on board the ship that can pollute the ocean! Besides the safety of the
passengers, many are also concerned with this disaster we have with our environment.
The Costa Concordia is a mystery that has yet to be completely solved. The captain also refuses to give a legitimate response. Experts say that it will take up to a month to safely extract all of the remaining fuel. Passengers claim that getting into the life boats was very chaotic and was like every man for himself. Although most of the passengers were evacuated many still remain lost. All anyone can do no is hope for the best, and keep their families in positive thoughts.[pic]
Rest in Peace Kim Jong- IL
By: Ava, Colette, Sam, Nicole
Many people have heard about the tragedy that hit North Korea, Kim Jong –il’s death. On Saturday December 17, 2011, he had a sudden heart attack at the age of 69. His son Kim Jong-Un will take over and be the new leader of the heart broken country. People went into the street during the mourning (when the country is sad about the death)which was from December 17- 29. Kim Jong-il was in office for 17 years, July 8 1994 to December 17, 2011. Due to North Korea’s bad economy there was a famine that killed two million people. While kids were eating grass and citizens made $900 annually Kim was treating himself to lobster and spending $700,000 on a cognac, expensive French liquor. Kim Jong-il was willing to do extreme punishments to anyone who disobeyed his laws. He would not let the people have freedom of the press of their own religious beliefs. “Virtually every aspect of political, social and religious life is controlled by the movement”, stated Human Rights Watch. He was even harsher than his father, Kim Il-Sung who also ruled North Korea he also died from a heart attack. In other countries many questions were asked about Kim Jong-Il’s death. They wanted to know how Kim Jong-Un will rule North Koreas. The nuclear plants are going also a concern. USA would like to eventually become allies with North Korea. Even though many believe that Kim made bad decisions, his country will miss him, and the new ruler will be welcomed.

Learning about
Penguins
Victor, Venkat, Johnny, Jocelyn
On Friday the 20th on January the kindergartners learned about penguins with their 8th grade buddies. Each kindergartner was assigned a penguin to research, for example Emperor penguins,
Humboldt penguins and Macaroni penguins with their buddies. Together they had to answer a few leave, but left knowing they will come back. This was a learning experience for both of them and they are looking forward to working another activity together again.
However it is always good to keep a footstep in their hearts how this is our last year at Edison Park. Years from now when we come back to Edison to visit some of the teachers that have gotten us where we will be we will glad to see our buddies all grow up and ready to move on in life and high school. This moment we had with the penguins will be a moment they will remember for the rest of their lives and for us too.
Our models have made us role models and taught us a lesson of our lives. If it wasn’t for them we would have not gone throw the great experienced of teaching them and spending wonderful time with them and having the opportunity we had.
their penguin, such as, ‘What do the penguins eat?’ How big are they? And what predators eat them. In class they were already familiar with the penguins so they took on the research.
While the kindergartners were coming up the stairs they were very excited. They came into the room with
questions about their pajamas and holding a picture of their assigned penguin. Everyone greeted each other and couldn’t wait to get started. After they got all their information both buddies printed more pictures of their penguin and started coloring. At the end of the period they were reluctant to
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
By: Sarah a., Peter, Abbey, Ben, and Austin 8th
On January 14th, 2012, Americans celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It was not just a day off for students in Chicago, but also a day to remember what dr. King did to change our world.
Martin Luther king was born on January 15th, 1929 and grew up in a segregated community. Martin grew tired of the injustice going on in America, and was determined to do whatever it took to fight for justice. Sometimes it meant making sacrifices, including going to jail. However, his courage, helped bring races together. At the age of 35, he won the Nobel Peace Prize because he was the first one in the western world that showed struggle can be overcome without violence. In memory of Dr. King today people continue to volunteer to work in civil action groups, to serve low income schools and at homeless shelters in Chicago. Just as Martin Luther King Jr. brought together people of different races, civil action groups today bring people together diverse groups of people.
Martin Luther King’s legacy will never be forgotten as the people continue to remember him as they carry out his legacy in acts of kindness.

Mrs. Carman’s Christmas Adventure!
By: Alexa, Jack, Justin, and Nikki
As we were let out for Christmas vacation, many families anxiously waited for Christmas to come but, Mrs. Carman had exiting plans to go to China. The Howler caught up with her to find out a little bit more about her trip.
When Mrs. Carman first arrived, she had no idea what to expect., but soon realized that her trip was really fun and exiting! When The Howler asked Mrs. Carman about the highlights of her trip, she replied, “The food and beach were great and the destinations were amazing.” She even got a nice tan as her present from Guam. Mrs. Carman decided to go to Guam because her husband was born there and wanted to see what it was like. She went to Hong Kong because it was close to Guam and explored the one of a kind city. In addition to sight seeing, she absorbed the culture around her. Her favorite foods were dim sum and a chicken noodle dish. The Howler also found out that when in Hong Kong if you ask for water, they serve it warm to get rid of any bacteria. How weird is that??
The people in Hong Kong mostly speak English it was pretty easy to understand. However, the people of Guam spoke Japanese so it was a little harder to understand. She loved both Hong Kong and Guam particularly Hong Kong because of all the temples and sights she saw, and Guam because of all the beaches and snorkeling.
She bought a couple of souvenirs along the way that included a china tea set, a set of decorative chop sticks, and a jade dragon that is supposed to get rid of evil in your home.
Mrs. Carman really enjoyed her trip but eventually it was time to come back. She wishes she could have stayed in the warm weather longer, but soon returned to her snowy hometown. Mr. and Mrs. Carman will remember their trip for a lifetime.
The Song That Sets Fire To The Rain!
By: Jeslyn, Marija, Danny and Jacob
Set fire to the rain is a spectacular song. Currently Adele’s song is in third place on the iTunes chart. Set Fire To The was released on January 24, 2011 and has been topping charts since. Her song was produced by David Guetta and has been receiving Grammy nods.
Adele did a very good job making this song. It’s like she is telling a story from the heart with meaning and power. Hopefully Adele could make more songs just like this one. One of Adele’s top songs Set Fire to the Rain is very catchy. It is also very creative and full of a lot of meaning. It is the best top song and it deserves to be one of the top songs.
I would give this song ½ of a paw. I give this ½ a paw because I am not a fan of this type of music, but the song was kind of catchy.
-Danny ½ [pic]
Set fire to the rain is a okay song with powerful moments in it. Some people will like it and some will not. This song gets old after a while. I give it one paw because it was pretty good.
-Jacob [pic]
Set fire to the rain is a great song, shows power and emotion threw out the song. This song gets intense in the middle. I would give this song two paws!

This Is Only the Beginning of Something Great
Lindsey, Robyn, and Rose 7th
A life guard, a college student, and now a soon-to-be mother? Mrs. Riordan has come a long way since protecting kids at Leon beach, for seven years of her life.
Be ready to jump back in time! She grew up a swimmer, so her first job as a Life Guard was no surprise.
Her parents played a very important part in her life and are still her role models today. They were determined, hard working people who pushed her to pursue a career in education, but that was not her first choice. Originally she went to college at the University of Illinois with a major in economics. After one year that interest faded away and she decided to start studying in the field of education.
She had two other encounters that lead her in that direction. At her high school, Walter Payton, she helped tutor a student with a learning disability, which made her want to help others learn. While in college she studied how children developed, in the process of life, from birth to four years of ages. That class narrowed down what age group she wanted to work with. With all of this encouragement she knew she wanted to have children of her own one day.
“Go figure, right?” Mrs. Riordan stated after she said her other job of choice would have been at a nursery with babies if she was not a teacher. Maybe this thought was formed from all the studying and learning she did on the growth of humans.
Right now Mrs. Riordan is 27 weeks pregnant with a baby boy due on April 21, 2012. Baby names are going to be kept within the family for now.
School is where she spends most of her time and while being gone; her students will miss her dearly. Sports may also be affected for she cannot be as aggressive as she would like to be while coaching. Even though some of Mrs. Riordan’s after school time will be affected, hopefully nothing will change with her students.
The fact that she wants her son to attend Edison Park Elementary when he grows up is not unexpected. She plans on staying in the Edison Park area because all of the close family, and “soon to be” babysitters who live near to their cozy home. Mr. Riordan, a firefighter also plans on sharing baby time with his wife.
There is one concern. They hope that their two dogs do not get jealous of the new arrival. Even though they are loving dogs, they were the “babies” of the house first.
Back on the topic of her parents she states, “If I am half the parent they were to me, I know I’ll do pretty good.” This touching moment made the Howler realize how very important her parents are in her life.
To Mrs. Riordan, A.K.A future mother, the Howler wishes good luck and
Congratulations!
The Melody of Sarah H
By: Liz, Patrycja, Eddie, and Emily
Sarah H is a song which improves as it plays. While listening one will find she is uplifting, versatile and radiant, just like the music which she cherishes. Delve into the lyrics of her life and get to know EPE’s Student Council President. Although she is one busy girl, she knows how to keep her priorities straight. “School is number 1”, she states, and proves it by being honor roll. Her role as president makes her very understanding and stronger .It challenges her to accommodate everyone, while not going outside of the rules or the budget. This creates a impressive resume for high school and allows her to achieve her true dream; becoming a special education teacher. Every Tuesday Sarah takes little steps towards her goal by interacting with Ms. Grossman’s students. “It really helps me understand them,” Sarah explains of her bond with 208’s bright stars. Before special education begins, Sarah embraces 8th grade and all it has to offer. She participates in multiple activities but this fabulous female is mostly looking forward to playing soccer this season. “It is so much fun and I really learn about everyone’s personality.” She conveys that the sport also instructs her how to communicate with a team.
Besides soccer, Sarah adores 8th grade experiences with her loyal peers with a joyful conclusion to middle school. From contagious laughter to eating soft, salty French fries, she cannot get enough of her friends.
Though she spends great time with friends, Sarah remains incredibly grateful for her relatives. Just, “hanging around with them,” brings joy to her heart.
When Sarah is home alone she walks into her room and enters a musical paradise. She reveals her addiction and love for music, which keeps her mighty. While secretly dancing to her favorite songs, including “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People.
This beautiful individual states, “I will not let others drag me down. I want to stay myself,” which describes Sarah in a nut shell. Who would want to remix such a precious song anyway?
All wolves will miss her when she graduates for she will always be remembered as a beautiful melody in Edison Park’s symphony. Keep dancing Sarah
The Big Shut Down
By: Sarah H and Tierney M
Wikipedia was shut down on January 18th, 2012, but only temporarily! Due to laws that Wikipedia had to follow, they shut down their website for twenty four hours to protest SOPA and PIPA and the message they have sent. They were protesting the government. They were following Italy's footsteps, which previously shut down their Wikipedia to protest SOPA regulations. The staff of Wikipedia took a stand and shut down the website for twenty- four hours. SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act, which is the organization in which Wikipedia is protesting. Started by U.S representative Lamar S. Smith, the sole purpose of the organization was to expand the ability of law enforcement, to fight piracy on the internet. Another organization challenging Wikipedia is PIPA, which stands for Protect IP Act. PIPA, like SOPA, was a law created to stop online piracy and trafficking of “Rogue websites” inside and outside of the U.S. The law only came into effect in May of 2011, and was given a Forty- seven million dollar budget to hire specialists to control…Both programs were helping protect Wikipedia against all problems they were having with the internet. Wikipedia was the only website affected by SOPA and PIPA, and although people were saying the Internet as a whole went down, only Wikipedia was affected. Although many people believes Wikipedia would be shut down for a while, it was only affected for 24 hours. Facebook, Twitter Reddit, and Google have taken a stand as well. On Google, a censor was put over the Google sign saying “Tell Congress SOPA and PIPA protest.” Twitter also wanted to shut down, but figured it would ruin business. These acts will affect people because many blogs will be shut down, websites will avoid renovation, “and posting videos of your child singing on YouTube may be illegal,”states
This is a big problem because many people from this generation live off the internet. The internet is used daily and is very important to many people lives. The internet is used for work, research, entertainment, social networking and many other things. If the internet shut down it would be a tragedy for modern science and technology. Many people have spent many years working on creating and advancing the internet to make it perfect, and the SOPA and PIPA acts are decreasing all of the work. The internet is a very important obsession in modern society and to have it lost will be a nightmare. Websites should not fall for the SOPA and PIPA act.
Dance of the Year
By: Angie, Natalia, Rocco, & Brandon 7th
On December 22, 2011 the Winter Wonderland Dance was the talk of the day. There was much to offer when students paid five dollars for a ticket to the dance, they received a pair of glow in the dark shader glasses which they wore while dancing. Though this year did not include Mrs. Itter break dancing, it was still a spectacular event. Dancing, food, as well as plenty of fun was offered by the Student Council Committee.
Without all of the music, decorations, or lights all fun would be erased. Therefore preparations were necessary. “Mrs. Blumberg recommended the DJ because he was here last year and he gave Edison a huge discount. It took him around 25 minutes to setup his equipment,” Ms. McGrath stated. The pizza from Moretti’s was also discounted. There were many people who had a role in both of the dances. All of the middle school teachers including Ms. Shapiro and Mr. Salus were chaperones. Mr.Z and Ms. McMahon kept the school open late allowing the entertainment to proceed.
A seventh grade boy that attended the dance rated it. “Four out of five paws, because I felt kind of uncomfortable that the teachers were watching”. When it was time for Snowball, the same student commented that he had no fears dancing with anyone.
The students were not the only ones having fun and dancing all night long, the teachers were rocking out to songs such as “Dougie” and “Cat daddy.”
“The dance went really well. I do not know what could be changed,” Ms. McGrath mentioned. The student council realized that the timing was perfect .They knew many students may be leaving town on Friday, before winter break, so they chose Thursday to be the day of the dance.
Overall this year’s dance was a huge success. “The student council made an excellent profit. The money will provide more school activities,” Ms. McGrath commented on where the money that was made is going to.
That evening while each individual glanced at the youth and adults, they noticed the joy that flowed through the atmosphere. Middle school should look forward to a even more and improved dance in the spring.
