Sarah Flanagan with Camille Carter, President

of the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce

Black Wealth Matters

Camille Carter, President of the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce, told club members on March 19 that black wealth matters. Camille, a graduate of Michigan State who has served as a volunteer in the Peace Corp, brought her daughter here to Madison 16 years ago. Camille, who works in financial services and insurance, has been President of the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce for a little over one year. This agency, a business empowerment agency, is 100 percent volunteer with two part time staff. They promote, lead, and advocate for black businesses. They partner with the City of Madison, Urban League, the Hmong Chamber of Commerce, the City of Fitchburg, and have alliances in Milwaukee.

Nationally, black businesses have risen 3.3% and black women entrepreneurs are the fastest growing but black businesses trail white, Asian, and Hispanic businesses, she said.

In an earlier time, the Klu Klux Klan destroyed the Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And when rioting and looting started during riots in the big cities, blacks had to go outside of their communities to to shop Today obstacles to black businesses are access to capital, access to information, and inferior services perception. Integration has given us a sense of competition, Camille said. In Asian communities, dollars circulate in 28 days before going to a white business. For Jewish, it is 17 days, Hispanic, 7 days, and black, only 6 hours. Black people contribute less than 2% to black businesses. If raised, black businesses could add more jobs.

The Chamber of Commerce has put out a directory of 313 black businesses in Madison. Some are Madison Geeks, Krystal William-Oby Law Firm, Olson Toon Landscaping, and food carts.

Our thanks to Camille Carter for her important work in the community and for her visit and presentation.

“I have the audacity to believe that peoples every where can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered people have torn down, other-centered people can build up. – Martin Luther King (1964 Nobel Prize Acceptance speech)
