• Understand selected critical approaches to the form of the novel.

• Write sophisticated interpretations of novels informed by selected contexts.

JUSTIFICATION OF COURSE

a. STUDENT NEEDS TO BE SERVED: Within the discipline of literary studies, the model of comparative studies is alive and well. It currently takes on a wider focus and range of possibilities by examining the novel through various contexts. Students are challenged to think through how the novel can be studied in a truly global manner, and to understand the contexts of literary study beyond simply the development of a national tradition. Understanding the historical development and contexts of literary traditions or selected literary movements or genres is a core competency of English studies, and thus this elective course serves the needs of English majors, minors, and English Education majors to master historical approaches to interpretation.

b. RELATIONSHIP TO EXISTING COURSES WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT: This course is an upper-division course in literary traditions. It provides students with the opportunity to study an extremely important genre and examine it in light of a tightly focused context in order to better understand it both through and beyond the context of specifically national traditions.

This proposed change is part of a comprehensive revision of the English major. For more information, including sample syllabuses, visit .
