PREVIOUS MEETING

WIZARDS 122, HAWKS 111

CAPITAL ONE ARENA | WASHINGTON, D.C. | OCTOBER 28, 2021

Associated Press -- WASHINGTON -- Bradley Beal scored 27 points and Montrezl Harrell added 25 with 13 rebounds to lift the Washington Wizards to a 122-111 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night. The Wizards continued their impressive start under new coach Wes Unseld Jr., winning this time without new point guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Washington rested Dinwiddie, who missed almost all of last season because of a knee injury, on the second night of a back-to-back. The Wizards were also without Daniel Gafford because of a thigh issue.Washington is 4-1 for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Harrell had his second straight impressive game in Gafford's absence. He had 25 points and 11 rebounds in a win at Boston on Wednesday night, when Gafford played only seven minutes. The Hawks cut a 20-point second-half deficit to five in the fourth quarter, but Harrell dunked off a pass from Beal, and then a dunk by Beal made it 115-106. Washington led 64-55 at halftime and extended its advantage to 20 during the third quarter. Atlanta actually shot 54.5% on the night, but the Wizards' advantages in free throws (17-9) and 3-pointers (13-6) were too much for the Hawks to overcome. John Collins led Atlanta with 28 points on 14-of-16 shooting, and Trae Young added 15 points and 13 assists. Harrell came to the Wizards along with Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope when Washington traded Russell Westbrook to the Lakers during the offseason. All three newcomers have contributed. Kuzma and Caldwell-Pope scored 21 points each Thursday. Unseld, of course, is perhaps the most significant new arrival. The Hawks, who won at New Orleans the night before, took an early 16-10 lead against Washington but couldn't build on it.

Associated Press --TORONTO -- The Washington Wizards have a new coach and a new supporting cast around Bradley Beal, the superstar they are hoping will lead the franchise out of its enduring doldrums. For one night, it all came together for the Wizards, even in the charged atmosphere of the Raptors' long-awaited return to Toronto. Beal scored 23 points, Montrezl Harrell had 22 in his Wizards debut and Washington spoiled Toronto's homecoming, beating the Raptors 98-83 on Wednesday night. Kyle Kuzma -- acquired with Harrell in the trade that sent Russell Westbrook to the Lakers -- had 11 points and 15 rebounds for Washington. Spencer Dinwiddie, acquired from the Nets in the same four-team deal, scored 13 for the Wizards, who led by as many as 29 points to give coach Wes Unseld Jr. a victory in his first game. Washington's players celebrated by dousing Unseld with water. Fred VanVleet scored 12 points and rookie Scottie Barnes had 12 in his debut, but it was a disappointing performance for the Raptors, who played in Toronto for the first time since a Feb. 28, 2020 loss to Charlotte. Toronto relocated to Tampa last season because of border restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Beal credited Harrell for helping the Wizards maintain their focus through the pregame ceremonies for the Raptors, which included a brief musical performance by Toronto rapper Kardinal Offishall. Washington shot 5 of 27 from 3-point range, but Toronto wasn't any better, missing 19 of its first 21 3-point attempts and finishing 7 of 34. The Raptors shot 30.9% from the field overall. The Raptors scored the first five points of the game, promptly gave up a 7-0 run, and never led again. Many in the sellout crowd of 19,800, including rapper Drake, had long since departed by the time the final buzzer sounded. Toronto's OG Anunoby had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Barnes, the fourth pick in this year's draft, shot 5 for 13 and made a team-high six turnovers.
