VISION STATEMENT Bainbridge Elementary School is a diverse learning community that is committed to ensuring all students achieve their maximum potential by supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally.

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Bainbridge Elementary School is to provide meaningful academic experiences for ALL students to prepare them for an ever-changing and competitive global society. In our effort to realize this, we will:

Build trust and relationships in order to effectively collaborate with families and community members.

Provide quality learning experiences that utilize best instructional practices.

Collect data to measure and monitor student growth and inform instruction.

Title I Bainbridge Elementary School is a Title I School. The school receives this benefit due to the percentage of students who qualify to receive free or reduced meals. The Free and Reduced Meals application is available on the school and county websites and in the school office, for each family to complete in order to determine if they qualify for this benefit. Opportunities for parents, guardians, and other family members to become involved in their child's educational experience will be offered at our school and within the community. We will include families in all aspects of our Title I program. Please contact school administration with questions about Title I.

Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 5:

9:00-2:00

9:00 - 3:35

Students are not permitted to be dropped off at school any earlier than 8:45 AM; personnel will not be available to supervise students prior to that time. In addition, parents of

students who will be PM car riders should arrive no later than 3:30 PM.

VISITORS Visitors are always welcome at Bainbridge Elementary. To gain entry ALL visitors will use the buzzer system at the main entrance to the school. Please remove all hats, sunglasses, and hoods and speak clearly into the intercom so you can be heard. Visitors will be greeted by our front office staff. The office staff will ask visitors their purpose for being at the school before allowing entry into the building. Once inside the school, silence all cell phones and report directly to the main office to sign in. Please be prepared to show photo identification. Upon leaving the school, report back to the main office to sign out. In order for proper security procedures to be enforced, please do not hold or open doors for others. Throughout the school year remember to update your child's emergency contact list, as this is used to cross reference our visitors. The school's first responsibility is to provide for the safety of our students. Under no circumstances will a child be released from a classroom, the cafeteria, or the playground to anyone without permission from the office. When visiting the school, DO NOT park in front of the school building in the bus lane. It is absolutely necessary that the fire and bus lane be kept open at all times. Visitors are asked to park in the side parking lot.

ATTENDANCE Good attendance promotes achievement. Attendance habits learned in school generally remain with the student as he/she enters the work force as adults. We ask that parents write a note or send an email giving the reason for each absence or tardy and provide doctor's notes when applicable. Student attendance is monitored very closely; students missing more than 17 days during the school year, are at risk of failing. Please review the attendance policy sent home with all children on the first day of school. Should you have any questions pertaining to the expectations of the policy, call for clarification.

At Bainbridge Elementary School we love our

students and want to see them every day. A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. The primary rationale for improved student attendance is the relationship between student attendance and student achievement. It is known that teacher effectiveness is the strongest determinant of student success, and we are committed to high-quality instruction in our school. However, chronic student absence reduces even the best teacher's ability to provide high-quality learning opportunities. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. Research shows that attendance in school is an important factor in student achievement.

Poor attendance has serious implications for

student outcomes. The effects of lost school

days build up one absence at a time on individual students. Any absence, whether excused or not, denies students the opportunity to learn in accordance with the school's instructional program, but students who miss school are sometimes further excluded from learning opportunities as a consequence of chronic absenteeism. Every school day counts in a child's academic life.

Being tardy or absent from school can lead to lower academic achievement and students feeling disconnected from school and peers. We know that there are many instances that can keep a child away from school such as illness, family emergencies, and other unexpected events. To maintain two way communication between home and school, please send a note or contact the school office by phone or e-mail (dcloud@) when your child is absent from school. If we do not hear from you, we will make every effort to reach out to you.

When a student's attendance becomes a concern, we will intervene using home-school collaboration strategies such as phone calls, conferences, and home visits. We hope to provide resources and assistance to our students and their families. Our goal is to work together to ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to receive high-quality learning opportunities.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to school, whatever the reason, a solution can be found. Please contact the school office at 410-996-6030.

CHANGE OF TELEPHONE NUMBER, E-MAIL ADDRESS OR RESIDENCE

If you have a change of address, home telephone/cell phone number, work number, e-mail address, and/or emergency number, notify the school office so that we can update your student(s) records. Bainbridge Elementary is a certified Green School. To reduce environmental impact and improve communication, a weekly family newsletter will be e-mailed at the end of each week. Please be sure that you have an email address on file. Please notify the school office if you are unable to receive email.

EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER- make certain that the school has your correct telephone number or an emergency number that we can call in case of an emergency, accident or serious illness. If both parents work, arrangements must be made so that the child will have a place to go in case of illness or unexpected early dismissal of school.

DELAYED OPENINGS OF SCHOOLS When there is a delayed opening, all buses will run regular routes two hours later than the regularly scheduled time.

HEALTH SERVICES A registered nurse serves as a resource person to faculty, staff, and students. In the event your child has a serious injury, a persistent illness or an elevation of temperature, the nurse or office staff will contact you by phone, if possible. Periodically the nurse screens the children to check the condition of their scalp, teeth, hearing, and vision, etc. Potential physical problems found during the screening process will be reported to you. Please be sure the school is notified in writing if your child is allergic to bee stings or any other sources of serious allergic reactions or has any other significant health problems. Any children who need to take medications during the school day must have an adult transport the medication to and from school in a labeled container with the proper written request completed by the parents and the child's doctor. Forms are available for this request and may be obtained by calling the school nurse. Medicine must be taken in the presence of school officials. All medicines must be kept in the nurse's office in a secured location.

BUS TRANSPORTATION Riding a school bus is a privilege. Therefore, each child riding a bus is expected to follow the county bus regulations. When student behavior becomes inappropriate on the bus, students will be afforded the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and if necessary, graduated consequences and interventions will be used to teach students appropriate behaviors. Each family receives a "Parent Guide for Pupil Transportation." Please review the Parent Guide with your child. Good bus behavior is directly related to a safe and secure ride to and from school. COUNTY POLICY: Children are expected to ride their "assigned" bus. Passes to ride a different bus will only be given for emergencies and with principal approval.

CAR RIDERS For the safety of the students and staff, below are the procedures for the car rider lane at Bainbridge Elementary School. Please ready these guidelines very carefully and adhere to them to ensure that our students are safe during arrival and dismissal. Car rider and bus loop safety procedures:

Please pull your vehicle all the way forward to the cone. Please pull forward so we may fit as many vehicles as possible in the car rider loop.

Please keep a space open to allow those who may need to leave from the rear parking lot prior to the start of dismissal, the ability to do so.

At no point should any vehicle pass other cars in the car rider loop. Please move forward as soon as the cars in front of you have moved.

If you are arriving to Bainbridge during arrival or dismissal, we ask that you do not drive in the bus loop while our students are on the sidewalk. You are asked to wait until all students are in the school (arrival) or on buses (dismissal).

Please do not use the car loop as a parking area during arrival or dismissal.

Be VERY mindful of the speed at which you are driving when traveling in the car rider land. Please drive slowly and attentively.

CAFETERIA SERVICES Bainbridge Elementary School provides breakfast for students every morning. Breakfast is served in the classroom at 8:45 AM and is provided free of charge as part of the Maryland Meals for Achievement (MMFA) program. A well-balanced hot lunch is available each day school is in session. Students may prepay on their lunch account at any time by sending in funds or paying using the online School Cash system. Each student is given an account number to use when buying lunch or a snack. Students may also pay for each lunch at time of purchase. CIVIL DEFENSE, FIRE SAFETY AND SECURE STATUS DRILLS Bainbridge Elementary School conducts a minimum of

eight fire safety drills, two civil defense drills, and two secure status drills during the year. This practice helps to ensure that students will know what to do in an emergency.

STUDENT DRESS Certain clothing types and styles which are inappropriate as school-day attire can create a disruptive environment or cause a health or safety hazard, and are prohibited from school and school activities. Appropriate dress is expected of all students. Cecil County Public Schools has a well-defined student dress code, which lists certain forms of attire as prohibited. Pants or slacks that drag on the floor; footwear that poses a tripping, falling, or safety hazard such as flip flops or high heels, clothing that conceals the identity of the wearer, or clothing that reveals private body parts or underclothing are unacceptable. Also, shirts displaying alcohol or tobacco advertising, clothing with offensive slogans or pictures, short shorts, are examples of items that do not meet the dress code requirement. Such clothing may become a safety concern or may distract other students' learning.

CONFERENCES Parents may be asked to attend or may request a parent conference with their child's teacher at any time during the school year. Additional conferences may be requested throughout the year if needed. An hour one Wednesday per month has been identified as "communication/conferences". Please check the school calendar for these specific dates and reach out to your child's teacher if you would like to meet or confer by phone. As educators we realize that schools need to work closely with parents in creating the best possible academic environment for children. Let's join hands to promote the best education for your children.

POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS While at school, it is the responsibility of students to

conduct themselves in a respectful manner, which enhances their ability to learn and reach their potential. Behaviors that interfere with a safe and positive learning environment are unacceptable. Expectations regarding student behavior include:

o Be Respectful o Be Responsible o Be Safe

Examples of how to demonstrate respect, responsibility, and safety have been outlined for all areas of our building and school day. Our teachers and staff take the time to instruct students in the expectations and recognize students who demonstrate appropriate pro-social behaviors. We are committed to creating a school where teaching and learning take place every day in a safe, supportive, and respectful school environment, where students, school staff, and families are valued and have the opportunity to succeed. School safety and student success are our priorities. We will provide the instruction and support necessary to address students' academic and behavioral needs. When student

behavior becomes inappropriate, students will be afforded the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and if necessary, graduated consequences and interventions will be used to teach students appropriate behaviors. Please review the CCPS "Student Rights and Responsibilities" handbook or contact and administrator with questions regarding student behavior expectations and how they can be addressed.

BIRTHDAY/HOLIDAY/TREATS In accordance with the Distribution Policy and Regulation, personal materials such as student birthday party invitations are not to be distributed by students or school system personnel and are not the responsibility of the school system. In accordance with the Wellness Policy and Regulation, the significant increase in student food allergies and the medical risks faced with a child eating a food that contains an ingredient he or she is allergic to, we have changed how students can celebrate their birthday. If you would like for your child to briefly celebrate his/her birthday at school with classmates, we are asking that non-food items (pencils, erasers, stickers, etc.) be used. Please contact the school with any questions or suggestions as to what the students in your child's class may enjoy. Please know that sending in anything in celebration of your child's birthday is voluntary and not a necessity. All of our teachers recognize each child's birthday in the classrooms in a way that they are acknowledged without taking a significant amount of time from teaching and learning. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

RECOGNITION OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT The achievements of students will be

recognized in multiple ways. Bainbridge students may be recognized for excellent work in specific subjects or when they demonstrate academic improvement across marking periods. In addition, we will make an effort to recognize the academic achievement of students who do not meet the criteria for outstanding achievement but whose performance is improving or effort is apparent through demonstration of positive habits and attitudes.

HOMEWORK Homework and the inclusion of learning activities in the home environment plays an important role in the development of students. Learning at home provides an opportunity for students to develop self-reliance, self-direction, and practice of newly acquired skills. Homework also helps students establish habits of work which will influence their use of time throughout life. Classroom learning is enhanced through home learning by students; at times, class work is dependent upon outside preparation.

FIELD TRIPS Bainbridge Elementary students experience field trips that enhance the curriculum being taught at their particular grade level. When such trips are taken, information will be sent home along with a permission slip. Parents/guardians must sign and return the permission slip. Students are not permitted to go on a field trip without a signed permission slip. Parents who have attended volunteer In-service and have agreed to serve as chaperones on a field trip must ride the bus to and from the field trip with the students. Since chaperones will help with more than just their child, it is important that chaperones supervise their assigned students the entire trip. Siblings may not accompany the parent.

PHOTOGRAPHING/VIDEO TAPING During the school year, numerous activities/events that take place will be photographed and/or videotaped. Should you wish for your child NOT to be photographed or videotaped, please complete The Family Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA) Act form that is located in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook or call the school office. Unless there is a published school wide event, parents should refrain from taking pictures in the school setting. This is for the protection of all students. Also, we do have photographs taken for your purchase in the fall and in the spring; please check the school newsletter and calendar for these dates.

VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are a valuable part of any educational program. To become a volunteer it is mandatory that you attend the Volunteer In-service held at the school. Please call Mr. Ayers, Assistant Principal at 410-996-6030 for more information.

WITHDRAWALS If you find it necessary to withdraw your child from Bainbridge Elementary during the school year, please call the school office several days in advance for a Maryland Student Withdrawal/Transfer Record Card to be completed to send home with your child. Enrolling in a new school, as soon as possible, will allow us to send the records to the new school in a timely fashion.

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION Bainbridge Elementary School has an active PTO that provides many benefits to our students. We encourage you to join the PTO and become involved in the many activities that happen throughout the year. PTO is a great way to become more involved in your child's school.
