Long Distance AM Stations Short Wave Stations (around the world) Short Wave Utility & Emergency Freq Short Wave Program Listings

For Radio Equipment:

SW Reciever recommendations: Basic: Info-Mate AM/FM/SW/Weather, Air, TV, with 5 power sources (solar, wind-up, niCd batteries, AC adapter, DC automotive adapter); $60 Medium: Sangean ATS 505P; Digital with memories; $130 Almost any digital radios with multi memories in the $150-$200 range is good. Digital freq entry makes finding a specific station easy. Tend to be battery eaters (may want an InfoMate for a backup)

Extra wire attached to antenna boosts received signal Earphones help listening when the SW signal is fading

This guide is divided into 9 sections:

US Clear Channel AM Stations (long distance at night)

KFQD, Anchorage, AK WJR, Detroit, MI.......................760

These channels used to be used exclusively by just one station (except sharing with Alaska stations in some cases) but now are often shared with one other station in the lower 48. Theoriginal station (listed first) is now at least a "super regional" and the secondary listing is a "small regional" or "local" station running less power.

These stations even with some shared frequencies still provide "cross country" listening particularly if one uses some sort of AM directional antenna (homemade loop placed near the regular radio AM antenna etc) and the ones that are still totally clear channel may provide coast to coast listening even today. K's are west of the Mississippi and W's are east of the Mississippi except for KDKA in Pittsburg (the first licensed US commercial radio station). All of the stations listed first are running 50,000 watts of power though those listed second and third may be running much less power.

Add on a Wire Antenna to Assist Receiving SW An extra length of wire at least 20 feet in length with a stripped part of the wire wrapped around the receiving antenna, will greatly improve reception. Solareagle sells a roll up antenna which is easy to use inside, though any type of left over wire can be used for this purpose.

Earphones greatly help in listening when the SW signal is fading

Sideband Explanation USB = Upper Sideband LSB = Lower Sideband

An AM signal modulates on both sides of the center frequency while a sideband signals only modulates on one side of the center frequency (above or below). While most shortwave signals are AM some are Sideband and if one does not have a Sideband enabled radio they sound like gibberish. The advantage to a sideband signal is that it is less subject to fading and can carry a much longer distance for the same amount of transmitter output power. High end SW radios will be able to listen to a sideband station via a simple AM/USB/LSB switch.

Shortwave - Shortwave Bands

Use these frequency ranges when tuning around the shortwave bands to find international broadcasters. Only a very few stations operate outside these ranges.

49 Meter Band 5730 - 6205 kHz (5.73-6.205 Mhz) 41 Meter Band 7100 - 7595 31 Meter Band 9350 - 10000 25 Meter Band 11550 - 12160 22 Meter Band 13570 - 13870 19 Meter Band 15000 - 15710 16 Meter Band 17500 - 17900 13 Meter Band 21450 - 21850

Other Bands (few stations operating):

11m 25600 - 26100 60m 4750 - 5060 75m 3900 - 4000 90m 3200 - 3400 120m 2300 - 2490

Daytime Listening Shortwave Listening is generally at its poorest during the daylight hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. local time and are overall poorer during the day than at night.

N. Am Directed Short Wave Stations by Country and Time

This list is only a general guide. Times and frequencies do change with the seasons. I was unable tofind a pocket SW radio guide (or even a large guide that was current) so the data in this table was drawn from a number of sources and reformatted into a readable format. Part of the data is several years old for some stations and this list should be utilized only as a general guide. Remember all times are in UTC. I will update this listing in the future as some current guides are published or people post corrections or additions
