Women's & Gender Studies Course Approval Form

The Center for Women’s & Gender Studies offers courses within the program and through other departments that fulfill the degree requirements for undergraduate majors and minors and graduate certificate students. The Women’s & Gender Studies’ curriculum offers primary and component courses depending on how much of the course content is devoted to women’s and gender issues. See for an updated list of women’s studies approved courses.

Your support in expanding the course offerings to our students and exposing them to the breadth of women’s and gender studies is critical to the strength of our program. If your course will add to our curriculum, please fill out this form and submit it to the Center. The Curriculum Committee will review your application and respond as soon as possible.

Please indicate which of the following categories this course will fulfill. The Women’s Studies Curriculum Committee approves courses as either "Primary" or "Component."

___ Primary courses are those in which the overall course content focuses on women’s and/or gender issues. These issues constitute a main theme of the course and permeate course content. Primary courses automatically count as part of the women’s studies curriculum and fulfill requirements for the major or minor in Women’s Studies. Examples of Primary courses include ENGL 285 Images of Women in Literature and SOCA 405 Class, Status & Power.

___ Component courses include significant analysis of women's and/or gender issues (at least one-third of course content), but these issues are not the main topic of the course. It is recommended that students taking a component course have the opportunity to focus their individualized work (i.e. papers, projects, book reviews, etc.) on women's studies topics. Examples of component courses include SPAN 630 Latin American Culture and FCLT 250 Russian Fairy Tales.
