PROJECT: AN INFORMATIVE ESSAY

WRITING A BIOGRAPHY

A TRIBUTE TO DISTINGUISHED WOMEN IN THE ENGLISH SPEAKING WORLD

Women have always contributed to the history of the world but, as numerous other anonymous actors of our history, have long been ignored. In the last forty years, historians have highlighted their experiences. You are asked to investigate on these women. They may be from any English-speaking countries (England, the United States of America, Australia, Canada but also less obvious countries such as South Africa).

Today and yesterday’s WOMEN, DISTINGUISHED IN THEIR FIELDS OF EXPERTISE can be the centre of your research.

Examples:

• Mary Wollstonecraft and the education of women in the 18th century in England

• Sylvia Pankhurst and the fight for the vote in the 19th and 20th century in England

• Susan B. Anthony, pioneer in the fight for Women’s Rights

• Harriet Beecher Stowe, the first book against slavery

• Florence Nightingale and the renewal of medical care.

• Virginia Woolf and the right to a room of one’s own

• Rosa Parks: the fight for civil rights in the USA (USA).

• Amelia Earhart and new achievements for women in aviation (USA)

• Jane Goodall and her pioneer investigations in ethology

• Elizabeth Blackwell, first woman to have a medical degree.

• Rosalyn Franklyn and the DNA

• Eleanor Roosevelt and Human Rights

• Helen Keller and the physically handicapped

You should write the biography of the chosen woman. The essay should include a picture (if possible in colour) and a text with the following information:

• Introduction to the chosen woman

• Personal details

• Why she is distinguished

• Personal opinion about her merits
