The Power of a Woman

by

Marsland Moncrief

My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness.

II Corinthians 12:9

“NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A WOMAN.” This popular saying was first introduced as an advertising slogan for the Ladies Home Journal in 1941. At the time, the “power” did not have a modern feminist slant. As used by the editors in the March 1941 issue, and illustrated with cartoons, it referred to the power of wives to “subtly” lead their men “to the right decisions”. Well, history has certainly shown how the power of a woman can lead men in the right or wrong directions….subtly of course! NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A MAN’S ABILITY TO UNDERESTIMATE A WOMAN!

Last April the Women of St. Andrew’s hosted the annual luncheon and book review with a presentation by the gifted Rosemary Rumbley. In her review of Powerful Political Women by Joan McMahon Flatt, Rosemary highlighted women who from the beginning of time have been beacons, inspiring those who followed to fight against injustice and for ultimate equality. They often risked their own lives to shatter barriers and challenge expectations, because they believed that they could bring about a change for the better.

The circumstances of their times brought out a passion, heroism, determination, dedication, talent, and feminine sensibility in these confident women, who would stand on the stage of history and fight for the political rights of their sisters. These women often suffered persecution, slander, grief, heartbreak, and imprisonment to achieve their ends. They were laughed at, scorned, ridiculed-and worse.(Powerful Political Women/Joan Flatt) From Esther to Hillary, from Hatshepsut to Benazir Bhutto…women who desired a change for the better…new beginnings. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A WOMAN!

The power of a woman, it all started with Eve and has continued down in history from Esther to Hillary…from Hatshepsut to Benazir Bhutto…from you to me. Are you a woman who desires a change for the better…a new beginning? Who is your power source?

The power of a woman should never be underestimated. This fall the Women of St. Andrew’s Ministry will present a bible study of the women of the bible. Celebrated for their courage, vision, hospitality, and spiritual giftedness, it’s no wonder women were so important to God’s plan revealed in the Old and New Testaments. It wasn’t their natural qualities that made these women extraordinary but the power of the one true God whom they worshipped and served. (Twelve Extraordinary Women/John Macarthur) The Women’s Thursday morning bible study will begin the Thursday following Rally Day (September 11) with a 10 week study. Each session will focus on one biblical woman discovering new insights and providing a powerful witness to God’s gracious love that will leave you feeling challenged, encouraged, and deeply valued. You will study real women with real struggles and a real faith.

The New Year (2015) will focus on new beginnings and the “power” behind life changes. The Women’s Thursday Morning bible study will continue focusing on the women in the bible with Liz Curtis Higgs three books Bad Girls of the Bible And What We Can Learn from Them ;Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible...Flawed Women Loved by a Flawless God and Really Bad Girls of the Bible, More Lessons from Less-Than-Perfect Women.

BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE…Bad Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

“When she was perfect, beautiful, and innocent, I found no toehold where I could connect with Eve. When she was tempted by her flesh, humbled by her sin, and redeemed by her God, I could sing out, ‘Oh, sister Eve! Can we talk?’”

-from Bad Girls of the Bible

SLIGHTLY BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE…Good Girls Behaving Badly

“ A Slightly Bad Girl is simply this: a woman unwilling to fully submit to God. We love him, serve him, and worship him, yet we find it difficult to trust him completely to accept his plan for our lives, to rest in his sovereignty.”

-from Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible

REALLY BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE…Really Bad and (Sometimes) Proud of It

“We’ll save the Good Girls for another time. I always learn more from women who are less than perfect, simply because we have much more in common.”

-from Really Bad Girls of the Bible
