Good morning and welcome to our class assembly.
We start our assembly with a scene that might be familiar to a lot of people.
Oh no!
What’s wrong?
We don’t understand how to do our homework.
Oh dear, what are they going to do? It’s got to be handed in today and they know how scary (teacher’s name) can be if they haven’t done their homework.
(play scary music clip)
What can we do?
We need a miracle.
We need some help.
We need…
(play Ghostbusters music – enter the Ghostbusting team).
Hey there. We heard you needed some help.
That’s right, but who are you?
We’re the Ghostbusters!
But how can you help with our homework?
Well, we’re superheroes who help lots of people get rid of ghosts, ghouls and gooey stuff in their homes…so surely we can help!
I don’t think so really. There’s no ghosts or ghouls involved in our homework. Just maths and more maths.
Thanks anyway.
Ok, well, I guess we should go then.
(play Ghostbusters music again)
So we’re still stuck.
And we’ve still not done our homework.
We need a homework hero, not a ghostbusting hero.
(enter Wonder Woman)
Did someone say they needed a hero?
Yes! Who are you?
I’m Wonder Woman
(play Wonder Woman music)
I fight against the evil forces in the world to ensure peace and harmony for everyone.
Can you fight against the evil of our maths homework?
Erm, well, Maths was never my best subject actually.
Oh great. Another hero who can’t help.
Hey wait a minute! I can help with lots of other stuff…I could freeze your teacher so she couldn’t shout at you…
Erm, it’s tempting, but I think we’d get in a lot of trouble for that.
Yeah, I can’t see Mrs Sutherland being too pleased…
Well, maybe I should just go. I’m sure there’s someone who needs my superhero powers somewhere in the world.
Thanks anyway Wonder Woman.
(WW leaves)
Now what are we going to do?
I don’t know, but I can tell you something, I’m not too impressed with these superheroes. They can’t do much can they?
I know. There must be a hero out there somewhere who can help us.
(play “I need a hero” [Bonnie Tyler] – children to look around to the sky for a hero).
Wait! What’s that?
Is it a bird?
Is it a plane?
NO!!! It’s Superman!!!
(play Superman theme tune as he flies in)
Hey kids.
Hi Superman!
Cayman: I’m the greatest superhero and I heard you needed some help.
That’s right.
So what seems to be the problem? Is there an evil villain I need to find? Is there a crime that needs solving?
Well no.
Ok. Is there an innocent child who needs saving? A cat stuck up a tree?
Well no.
So what is it?
We can’t do our maths homework.
What? Do you know who I am? I am the world’s greatest superhero. I can save hundreds of people from a burning building in a matter of seconds. I can hold up a building with my little finger. I can…
That’s all well and good Superman, but can you help us with our maths homework?
Actually, I was never very good at anything above the 2 times table in maths.
Well then thank you very much for dropping by, but we need another kind of hero.
Oh, well, then I guess I should go…people to save, crimes to solve and all that.
I guess so. Bye Superman.
Now what are we going to do?
I know. If Superman can’t help us, no one can.
What I don’t understand is why all these so called Superheroes can’t help us.
Yeah, I don’t think they should be called Superheroes…they didn’t seem very super to me.
But they have super powers. That’s what makes a hero.
No it’s not. A hero’s someone who can help in any situation.
No it’s not. A hero’s someone lots of people admire and want to be like.
Wait a second. I think you need to sort this out to work out what kind of hero you need.
So what do we mean by the word hero?
Some people think that leaders of countries and governments are heroes.
Like Boudicca. She was a hero to the Britains when she led the fighting against the Romans when they invaded.
Exactly. People look up to and respect leaders who show strength in difficult situations. And that makes them heroes.
But Wayne Rooney’s my hero. He doesn’t lead a government or country!
Yeah, and 50 Cent’s my hero and he’s a rap artist, not a world leader!
This is the thing. Another way to explain the word hero is someone who you look up to for their skill or talent…and because they’re famous.
What about Iceland?
EVERYONE: What??
Well, the Iceland advert says that mums are heroes and, well, my mum can’t play football, she’s not a world leader, she’s not famous, and she certainly can’t rap!
EVERYONE: Hmmmm. That’s a good point.
So why is she called a hero?
Well, the dictionary definition of hero is someone who is recognised or admired for nobility…
Everyone: What’s nobility?
Someone who is noble is meant to have an excellent character. Can I continue now please?
Everyone: Sorry!
Anyway, a hero is someone recognised or admired for nobility, courage and outstanding achievements.
Everyone: So wait a minute!
What?
We can all be heroes!
You what?
I’m serious. If all it takes to be a hero is to be noble, brave and all that, we can all be heroes.
Well, I suppose you’re right.
Of course I am!
So I can be a hero?
Everyone: That’s right.
And I can too?
Everyone: That’s right.
All you have to do is make sure you do the best you can and be good to people and don’t hide what you’re good at and people will look up to you! That pretty much makes you a hero I reckon.
Everyone: Cool!
Wait a second. This still doesn’t solve our problem.
What problem?
Our homework! The bell’s about to go and we’ve still not done it.
(play “Hero” Mariah Carey as 2 children walk in)
Hey guys, what’s wrong?
We can’t understand how to do our maths homework!
Oh, well we’ve done it. Do you want us to explain it to you?
Really? That’d be great. Thanks.
(with flipchart show simultaneous equations – group of children sitting nodding and understanding)
You know what?
What?
You’re our heroes! We didn’t need superheroes like Superman or Wonder Woman. We didn’t need world leaders or footballers…
Although Wayne Rooney’s still my hero…
Well yes, but all we needed was someone to explain the work to us…that makes you a hero to us right now.
So we can all be heroes, see?!
That’s right. Sometimes just being the right person
In the right place…
At the right time is all you need to be a hero.
