Farewell from Dr Nick Cheales:

Dear Patients,

I am writing to inform you that I will be leaving Woodlands Health Centre at the end of September. I have decided to reduce my clinical work as a GP to allow myself adequate time to fulfil my developing role as a board member on the West Kent GP clinical commissioning group.

This has not been an easy decision. I joined the practice in 1986 and it has been a great privilege and pleasure to have been the GP for many families over the subsequent 26 years. I will cherish many happy memories and will miss you and all the team at Woodlands Health Centre greatly.

Dr Nick Cheales

Sun Protection

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, and it’s a growing problem. Each year, around 2,600 people die from skin cancer.

Skin cancers are caused by damage from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Protecting the skin from the sun can help prevent these cancers.

Whether you're on holiday or at home, you can protect yourself by following Cancer Research UK's SunSmart messages:

• Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm.

• Make sure you never burn.

• Aim to cover up with a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses.

• Remember to take extra care with children.

• Then use factor 15+ sunscreen.

Report any changes to moles or any unusual skin growths to your GP.

Hayfever

The hayfever season can last from March to October. If you have an allergy to pollen this could mean that your symptoms become aggravated during the summer months, especially during warm and sunny days. To reduce your exposure to pollen:

• Keep windows closed at night so pollen doesn’t enter the house.

• Smear petroleum jelly around the entrance of your nose to trap pollen and stop it being inhaled.

• Wash your hair, hands and face when you come back indoors and change your clothes. If possible, don't dry clothes outside.

• Use air filters to reduce pollen that is floating around the house.

• Keep car windows shut when driving.

• Don't mow the grass.

• Avoid fields and large areas of grassland.

• Dust with a wet cloth to stop any pollen or dust from being spread about.

Patient Panel Meeting 25.06.12

The patient participation group discussed at length appointing patients in PPG roles including chairperson. The progress which the surgery has made since the previous patient meeting and in response to our practice survey was reviewed at the meeting. The following points were discussed:

• The booking in board was updated to show patients how many people were waiting. Unfortunately we have had to disable this option as it included telephone consultations as well giving patients a false number of patients waiting.

• We have had training sessions for receptionists in which receptionists will now routinely inform patients when a GP or Nurse is running late.

• Receptionists will also be more informative when telling patients whether their appointment is in East Peckham or Paddock Wood.

• The extended hours have been publicised more on the website and on posters in the surgery.

• The out of hours service has also been publicised more on the website and on posters in the surgery.

• Doctors now have room numbers which are shown on a poster and on the rolling board which will hopefully assist new patients find the doctor’s room more easily.

• A sign has been put up by the music player in the reception waiting area in Paddock Wood to allow patients to become more aware that if they do not want the music on they only need to inform the receptionist.

• The notice boards are also being updated much more frequently.

• Review of the minor ailments leaflet.

• A PPG constitution was discussed. One of the group members has agreed to review and collate a new constitution for our group.

If you would like to see a full copy of our meeting minutes please go to our surgery website: .uk.
