ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP WITH A VETERINARIAN

Your commitment to your pet starts by making an appointment for a veterinary examination. Local veterinarians support that commitment by donating a free health examination with each adoption. A veterinarian can assess your animal's specific healthcare needs and answer questions. The free examination does not include any additional tests, vaccinations, medications or treatments. Here is a list of some tests and preventative measures that may be recommended:

? FeLV/FIV Testing for Cats ? Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus are infectious diseases that can be easily transmitted between cats. Cats may or may not show signs of illness, so it is important to have them tested in order to determine if your cat carries one of these viruses.

? Heartworm Test and Preventative ? Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and is most common in areas close to bodies of water during warmer months. Incidence of this disease is lower in Colorado compared to other areas of the country. However, if contracted, this disease can lead to a life-threatening illness in your pet.

? Flea and Tick Preventative ? Protecting your pet from fleas and ticks is vital to your pet's overall health, as fleas and ticks can transmit disease.

? Additional Vaccinations ? Please talk to your veterinarian regarding additional vaccinations or boosters. Recommendations will vary based on your pet's age and lifestyle.

? Fecal Examination ? Your new pet has been de-wormed for roundworms. However, we recommend that you have a stool sample evaluated for other internal parasites, such as Coccidia, Tapeworms or Giardia.

? Geriatric Care ? If you adopted an older animal, please consult with your veterinarian about a special diet, lab work, and dental care. Older animals have special needs and require more frequent veterinary attention to ensure all their needs are being met.

Congratulations on adopting a new pet from Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. We are so grateful that you chose to adopt from us. To help your furry friend get off to a great start, the Colorado Springs Area Veterinary Society (CSAVS) members listed in this booklet will provide one free veterinary wellness examination within 14 days of the date of adoption.

CHOOSING A VETERINARIAN

In choosing a veterinarian, your goal should be to find a doctor to establish a long-term relationship. Veterinarians can help you throughout the life of your pet(s) by:

? Providing current and accurate information on vaccination programs and making recommendations for care based on your animal's age, nutritional needs and current medications.

? Acting as a resource when you are selecting the right pet for your family, needing advice on animal behavior/training or coping with the loss of a companion animal.

? Providing both routine and emergency surgeries and dental care for your pet.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

Call the veterinary hospital to schedule an appointment for this free health examination. Please tell the receptionist that you have adopted an animal from Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

LICENSING AND IDENTIFICATION

An animal license and permanent identification is your pet's ticket home. Identification, such as a collar and tag and a current license, make it much more likely that if your pet gets lost, you will be reunited. Permanent identification like a microchip also increases the likelihood of your lost animal finding its way back to your loving arms; however, you must keep your microchip information current for it to have the most effect. Animal Law Enforcement officers will attempt to return all currently licensed animals home prior to transporting them to the shelter.

? Reuniting lost pets with their owners ? Safeguarding the welfare of animals ? Protecting public safety and health ? Rescuing animals in disasters ? Working to resolve human-animal conflict ? Providing medical care for injured animals ? Responsible pet ownership education

Be sure to take your adoption records, including the medical history report and certificates, to your veterinarian.

Provide regular socialization, training, exercise and veterinarian care

Training builds confidence and strengthens the human-animal bond. Socializing your pet will help ensure that he is able to live with as little stress as possible and will be welcome in any setting. It is important to your animal's health and mental well-being that he receive regular exercise. (It's good for you, too!) Keeping vaccinations up-to-date and making regular visits to a veterinarian allows you to enjoy a healthy pet.

? Take a training class to strengthen the relationship between you and your dog. ? Play with your pet and provide socialization opportunities to help reduce behavioral problems. ? Ensure your dog or cat is groomed regularly and receives the optimal amount of quality pet food and fresh water.
