Ames Woodworkers Club Newsletter

January 2019 Ames, Iowa

The Ames Woodworkers Club meets at various places in Ames and in other locations in Central Iowa. Unless otherwise announced, meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. Membership is open to all interested in woodworking, arts and crafts involving wood, and related activities. Annual dues for 2019 are $10.00.

NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, January 15th, 2019

Program: “Bring Your Favorite Tool” – Group Discussion

Time: Gathering begins at 6:30; Meeting begins at 7:00 pm

Location: Fire Safety Institute Building, ISU Campus, Ames, Iowa

The meeting topic this month is "Bring Your Favorite Tool" - an extended group discussion to assist members in learning about various tools types, tool brands, and specific tool models that fellow members have found to be particularly helpful in their woodworking activities, and would recommend them to others.  Members are invited to participate in the discussion and bring your favorite tool (or tools, if you can't decide on a "favorite" - perhaps tools are like your children?) to show and to describe how you use the tool and why you consider it your favorite (....or one of your favorites).  We will also be accepting membership renewals at the meeting, and a Show and Tell session for member's woodworking projects will be held as well.

Directions to the Fire Safety Institute Building, Haber Road, Ames (ISU campus) - From the intersection of 13th Street and Stange Road (south of Veenker Golf Course), proceed one "long" block east on 13th St. past the apartment complex to the next intersection, and turn right (south) onto Haber Road. The Fire Safety Institute Building is a brick building just to the north of the railroad tracks and the ISU gasoline station.  There is plenty of parking available in the lot immediately south of the building.  Enter through the main entrance on the south side of the building.  The room we will meet in is inside the front entry, down a short hallway, and then to the right.

Please note that next month (February) we will be purging our e-mail list of members that have not renewed their membership or have not paid dues within the past two years.   If you have not already done so, members should print and complete the attached Membership Renewal form for 2019 and bring payment for 2019 dues ($10.00) to the meeting on Tuesday, or you can send your membership renewal form by postal mail to the address included on the form.  If you would like to remain a member of the AWC, receive the monthly newsletter, and benefit from club discounts at local vendors of woodworking tools and supplies, I encourage you to renew your membership this month.

LAST MEETING NOTES: The AWC’s meeting in December was held on Tuesday, December 18th at the Fire Safety Institute Building on the campus of Iowa State Uniuversity – approximately 38 members and guests were in attendance. After members enjoyed another excellent pot luck dinner from 6:00 to 6:40, the meeting then proceeded. Will Zitterich provided a review of the activities of the Cabinetmakers special interest group of their meeting topics done throughout the year. Rob Wallace gave the report for the Woodturners group for past and upcoming meetings and possible demonstration topics. The business portion of the meeting then commenced with discussion of options of locations for future AWC meetings. The most viable option presented was to have future meetings (beginning March 2019) held at the Heartland Senior Services Building in Ames. Jim Merideth made a motion to accept the invitation to have the AWC meet at HSS and donate $360 for one year in advance; Jeff Witt made an amendment to that motion to the effect that $400/year be donated to HSS for use of the facility; both the amendment and the main motion were approved unani-mously by the group. President Carl Link then conducted an election for Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer; for Vice President, Jeff Witt was nominated and elected; Rob Wallace was re-elected to the Secretary/Treasurer position. Carl then “passed the gavel” to incoming AWC President Paul Larson. Paul then thanked Carl for his service as President (again!) of the AWC over this past year, and the group recognized Carl’s service with omnibus applause. Paul then said a few words about the forthcoming year’s activities, and that a meeting of the Board of Advisers was set for January 2nd to develop the meeting program topics and presenters for 2019. We look forward to continued activities of the AWC and active participation of its members.

At this time of year, it is important to remember that all polyvinyl acetate (PVA) “wood glues” are freezing sensitive, and should never be left in unheated shops or stored in areas that are allowed to go below 32°F. Freezing changes the polymerizing and bonding characteristics in these glues that use water as a solvent. If it is suspected that a wood glue has frozen, it is advised to check the glue’s bonding on a test piece before using on critical projects, or to simply discard the glue to assure that wood joints do not fail in the future.
