1. A car is stopped at a red light. When the light turns green, the driver accelerates the car at a constant rate of +5.0 m/s2 for 7.0 seconds. What is the car's final velocity? What is the car's total displacement?

2. A man is riding his bicycle at 8.5 m/s. When a car cuts in front of him, he decelerates at a rate of ?2.8 m/s2. How long does it take him to stop? How far has he moved during that time frame?

3. A penny is dropped from the top of the Empire State Building in New York City (h=381 m). Knowing that gravity accelerates the penny at a rate of ?9.8 m/s2, with what velocity does the penny hit the ground? How long does it take to hit the ground?

4. A curling rink is approximately 35 m long from button to button. Mr. Grover releases a rock and 20. seconds later it stops on the far button. What was the initial velocity of the stone? What deceleration did it undergo?

5. A rocket ship undergoes an acceleration of 112.0 m/s2 for a period of 8 seconds. Knowing the rocket began with an initial velocity of 1000. m/s how far did it go during the 8 second period of acceleration? What is the final velocity of the rocket?

6. Marvin the Martian's flying saucer is hurtling through space at a rate of 7.0 x 107 m/s. In the span of 30.0 seconds, the flying saucer undergoes a constant (negative) acceleration and has a final velocity of ?2.0 x 108 m/s. What was the rate of acceleration of the spacecraft? How far did his flying saucer move during a) the entire trip? b) the first 10 seconds?

7. A parachutist jumps from a plane and reaches a terminal velocity of 45.0 m/s. Once he opens his parachute, he slows to 5.0 m/s it a span of .20 s. What was his rate of deceleration?

8. A hockey player skating at a velocity of 15.0 m/s starts sliding and slows at a rate of ? 0.42 m/s2. During the first 5 seconds, how far has he traveled? How long does he take to stop? What is his velocity at t=8.0 s?
