LIE #1: (overconfidence) "I have got this"

• Catch this one by finding yourself thinking consistently that 1) you never need help, 2) what you do is always amazing, and/or 3) you can't think of how anyone might pray for you in whatever you're doing.

o P.S. Confidence isn't necessarily a bad thing! Just when it leads to relying on yourself and not the Lord and His people!

• Jesus Calling New Years Eve Entry "My abundance and your emptiness are a perfect match"

o TRUE: GOD HAS GOT THIS

o "For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves..." ~ 2 Corinthians 4:5-7

LIE #2: (lack of confidence) "I definitely don't got this"

• Even if you feel afraid, insecure, and/or unqualified in something you are doing in YL, be assured that you are called and chosen for this and God will use you. You don't have to rely on yourself, but on God.

o TRUE: GOD HAS GOT THIS

o Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. ~ Isaiah 43:1

o You are my witnesses,’ declares the Lord, ‘and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. ~ Isaiah 43:10

LIE #3: (incompetent/unequipped/unqualified) "I'm not good enough at ________"

• Fill in the blank! We all feel this way sometimes, but it is not the Lord's voice telling you that you're not good enough.

• This could be in giving a talk or in speaking with a boy or girl 1-on-1. In God you are not unable. You are ABLE. It's okay if you don't know the perfect thing to say to each kid. You may not be qualified to speak specifically into the things in their life as far as having the same experiences, but you are more than qualified to love them.

• Relevant quote: "Jacob was a cheater; Peter had a temper; David had an affair; Noah got drunk; Jonah ran from God; Paul was a murderer; Gideon was insecure; Miriam was a gossiper; Martha was a worrier; Thomas was a doubter; Sara was impatient; Elijah was moody; Moses stuttered; Zaccheus was short; Abraham was old and Lazarus was dead. Now,what’s YOUR excuse? Can God use you or not? Remember, God does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called."

o TRUE: IF YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH FOR GOD, YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH

o But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9

o The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. Habakkuk 3:19

o 31 If God is for us, who can be against us? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies [qualifies]. 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. ~ Romans 8:31, 33, 37

LIE #4: (unknowledgeable) "I don't know enough of the Bible"

• Of course of course of course (!) you should always have a desire to know more of the Word! It is your life! I've heard one of the most dangerous places you can get to as a believer is when you no longer want to know what God says, in which case, you get on your knees and pray to Him!!!

• But this sounds just like the "I'm not good enough" lie Satan wants us to believe so that we think we can't be used because we are lacking something.

o TRUE: GOD WILL GIVE YOU WORDS AT THE PROPER TIME

o I will give you words and wisdom ~ Luke 21:15

o Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. ~ 1 Corinthians 1:7

LIE #5: (too dry/over-exhausted) "I don't have anything left to give"

• You are secure in your calling even when you feel like you have nothing left! God is gracious to give to those who ask.

• If you're feeling overly exhausted in ministry, it may be a sign you are working outside of your own limitations and trying to do it yourself!

• Part of leading is learning to set healthy boundaries for yourself and to manage your time in a way that brings God glory. So don't be afraid to spend time in isolation with God and to tell him how exhausted you are.

o TRUE: GOD IS FULL OF LIFE AND GIVES ABUNDANTLY

o Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders. ~ Deuteronomy 33:12

LIE #6: (not seeing fruit) "God isn't using me. Am I even making an impact?"

• We know that as the Lord's, we function as those who walk in what we cannot see! We cannot see into the hearts of our kids, but God can. We must labor in faith. To see a kid grow in their faith is a blessing! But not to see this does not mean God is not using you. Nothing you do for the Lord is ever wasted.

o TRUE: THE LORD IS USING YOU

o Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. ~ Matthew 9:37

LIE #7: (comparison) "I'm not as liked/talented/etc as the other leaders"

• The enemy really likes to get you to compare yourself to others. It not only steals your joy, but makes you feel unusable and worthless! But that is not how it works in the body of Christ. He makes us all unique for a reason and meant for us to work together. There is something uniquely purposeful about each individual person.

o TRUE: GOD LOVES WHO HE MADE YOU AS & HE MADE YOU WHO YOU ARE FOR A REASON.

o For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. ~ 1 Corinthians 12:14

o Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,  for each one should carry their own load. ~ Galatians 6:4-5

LIE #8: (can't be myself) "Kids won't like me for who I am if I'm not on my 'game' 24/7"

• This puts the focus on the self rather than the kids. One of my favorite parts of being a YL leader is that it teaches me how that question isn't even relevant! What IS relevant is "Do I like them?"

• We get to give out love to kids whether they have any desire or capacity to return it...just like the Lord does with us. There is freedom in this. So y'know what?! It's OK if they don't like you. Your job isn't to get them to like you, but to love them and share Christ with them.

o TRUE: GOD LOVES YOU

o TRUE: GOD GIVES YOU THE FREEDOM TO NOT FOCUS ON YOURSELF

o If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that...35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. ~ Luke 6:32-33, 35

LIE #9: (lack of support) "I'm alone in ministry"

• If you feel alone in ministry, it's okay to tell your team and ask for their help!

• You are never alone with God. He sees us and our hearts. If your heart is to serve Him, rest assured that He is watching and just waiting to support you!

o TRUE: GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU

o For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His. ~ 2 Chronicles 16:9

o You are precious and honored in my sight, and . . . I love you ~ Isaiah 43:4

o See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands ~ Isaiah 49:16

LIE #10: (unvalued/unloved) "My team doesn't like me or value me"

• First, it's so important to make sure you help encourage one another and almost be a mirror back for them of their value! I can't say that enough!

• Love bonds us and if you don't love one another, especially when fighting in a spiritual battle together...you are giving yourself, your teammates, and your kids a major disadvantage to hearing the gospel.

• Not to mention how important it is for kids to see how much the family of God loves one another, unlike broken families of today of which many of them come from and go back to right after being with you. Love one another!

• Yet still, you can walk secure in your value to God, regardless of how others treat you or how you even perceive yourself.

o TRUE: GOD LOVES YOU

o TRUE: YOU HAVE VALUE TO GOD

o A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. ~ John 13:34-35

o Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. ~ Isaiah 43:4

o For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. ~ Psalm 139:13-14

LIE #11: (distraction) "Squirrel!"

• Do you get distracted at club, where all the details of club overshadow your ability to watch for God? This is just a funny way of saying that Satan sometimes wants to keep your eyes everywhere but on God, while God is jealous for your gaze to be on Him constantly.

o TRUE: GOD IS JEALOUS FOR YOUR FOCUS

o And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. ~ Hebrews 12:1b-2a

o Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. ~ Proverbs 4:25

LIE #12: (i'm not a savior) "It's my job to save you"

• It's true that you are a light that God has lit and wants to show Himself to others by you. And you should not hide 'under a bowl.' But God called you into light, not yourself...and not another besides Him. Remember that God calls each person to Himself! He certainly uses you, but it is His work and His love that accomplishes that which He wills.

o TRUE: GOD BRINGS SINNERS TO REPENTANCE

o But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. ~ 1 Peter 2:9

Prayer is a powerful tool we've been given to battle the enemy! And when we use the Word of God as our basis for praying, we can be confident that we are partnering with God Himself to release His truth, love, and healing to many. In your leading, you're going to be attacked. So be ready to identify lies from truth as you lead, mostly that you're feeling/believing in your own heart and thinking in your own mind. Catch the lies coming your way, identify them, identify truth, and pray in that truth.
