Dictionary Race Game

Objective: This game will help students learn to find words in the dictionary more quickly.

Materials: word cards (one set, copied on thick cardstock) dictionary (one for each player)

Number of Players: small group of 3 - 6 students

How to Play:

Shuffle the word cards and place them face down on the table. One student (the game leader) flips a card from the top and reads it aloud to the group. He or she can also spell it, if necessary. Everyone else in the group looks the word up in the dictionary.

When a player find the word, he/she yells "Got it!" and points to the word. The game leader checks the word to make sure it is correct. If it is correct, the person who found the word reads the definition to the group.

The player who found the word becomes the new game leader. He/she flips the next card and reads the word. Everyone else in the group (including the former game leader) searches for the word as quickly as possible.

The game continues until there are no cards left in the deck.

Management Ideas:

If you have a mix of higher and lower students, you may want to have kids work together in pairs.

After someone finds the word and reads the definition, you may want to make a rule that everyone else must find the word before the next card is flipped.
