Third Grade Fluency Homework

In order to help students learn to read more fluently, part of their nightly homework will be to read for one minute. Studies show that there is a high correlation between fluency and comprehension. Students should read with intonation, and pause for punctuation.

Each week a fluency page will be attached to their homework packet. This page is usually from our reading series. It may be different if we do not have a Houghton Mifflin story that particular week.

Students should read the passage for one minute and record the words per minute on their grammar activity sheet. If they make an error or skip a word, then subtract those errors from the total number of words per minute. This fluency page will also be used for grammar homework periodically. The page should be returned every day along with their sentences and math homework.

Parents should initial the words per minute so that we know you were helping your child with their daily practice. This way you will also be able to monitor their progress.

Thank you for supporting your child in building their reading fluency.

Our district has adopted California’s nutritional guidelines which require us to limit food and beverages that do not meet nutritional standards for our students. As a result of these new guidelines and our District’s adoption, this year Third Grade teachers will celebrate each child’s birthday in a special way. We will honor the child celebrating a birthday by singing “Happy Birthday.” They will also receive a pencil, bookmark, and homework pass to allow them to feel special on their birthday.

Thank you for understanding and complying with our District’s requirements.
