SENIORS WEEK 2006

SENIORS FESTIVAL 2019 | 13 – 24 February 2019

Project Information

What is the Seniors Festival?

NSW Seniors Festival will be held between Wednesday 13 and Sunday 24 February 2019. In Shellharbour it is our way of celebrating the valuable contribution seniors make to our community. It is a great opportunity to say thank you to seniors and for all the generations to join with older people to celebrate.

What happens during the Seniors Festival?

Whether it's getting online through hands-on computer courses, stepping out at dance events or learning the art of storytelling – there's something for everyone. There is our annual Trivia Challenge, film screenings, tai chi and free use of the pools including Aqua Aerobics.

Take some time out to learn something new, be adventurous or simply get together with some friends.

The objectives of the 2019 Seniors Festival program are to support projects that:

• connect seniors with a range of community organisations and services

• offer activities that provide seniors an opportunity to sample for free during NSW Seniors Festival and possibly continue beyond the festival

• empower older people in NSW to stay connected and contribute to their communities

• empower older people in NSW to live active and healthy lives with improved physical and mental wellbeing

• empower older people to lead fulfilling lives and achieve their potential in their communities

• provide older people with access to expert advice, information, tools and resources and enhance opportunities for social participation

• bring together community organisations to develop and implement initiatives for older people

• respond effectively to changes in the ageing population

What events can be included?

Events will differ depending on the interest and resources of each participating organisation. The Shellharbour Seniors Festival Committee is aiming to include a range of different organisations from across Shellharbour to ensure that there is a diversity of experiences and opportunities available and hence a more significant overall event. Examples of events / activities include:

• An exhibition of art works by or about local seniors

• Specific workshops or classes

• Special tours and visits to venues and facilities

• Promotion of achievements of seniors in the community

• Special offers and promotions from local businesses

• Discounted ticketing to special events

• Projects developed by local schools.

What will participating organisations be asked to commit?

Participating organisations will be asked to commit to at least one event or activity that will take place during Seniors Festival 2019 and be promoted as a Seniors Festival Project.

The event / activity can be one that the organisation is already running or it can be something new developed for the occasion. It can also be a special offer for seniors during Seniors Festival.

Adequate facilities for seniors with a disability are desirable such as wheelchair access to the venue.

Each participating organisation will be responsible for the coordination and management of their event (including costs) and will be required to provide a copy of their public liability insurance policy to the value of $20,000,000.

Events held in Shellharbour during the Seniors Festival will be promoted in the local Seniors Festival Program produced by Shellharbour City Council.

What are the benefits to participating organisations?

Benefits of being a part of Seniors Festival 2019 include:

• An opportunity to market to the senior community and to increase the profile of your organisation and its services to the senior community

• A way that your organisation can demonstrate a commitment to, and an interest in the senior community.

How will Seniors Festival events be promoted?

Council will produce a Calendar of Events that list events being held during the Seniors Festival. The calendar will cover the period from Wednesday 11 February to Friday 1 March 2019.

You may also contact Family and Community Services - Ageing, Disability and Home Care to have your event promoted through the NSW Seniors Festival website and included in the media release.

We can help you do this if you do not have access to the internet.

Individual organisations are also encouraged to promote their event at a local level.

How will the project be coordinated?

1. Organisations will receive this package of information during August 2018.

2. The Shellharbour Seniors Festival committee will commence meeting from August 2018 to coordinate Seniors Festival 2018 events.

3. Participating organisations to return Event Information Forms and a copy of public liability insurance by Friday 23 November 2018.
