IRA/NCTE Standard:

Standard 6: Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and nonprint texts.

Grade Level: Prekindergarten

Objective: The students will construct an alphabet book

Materials Needed:

• Selection of alphabet trade books

• Chart paper

• Crayons

• Paper to use in making alphabet books

Procedure:

1. Bring a selection of alphabet trade books to the classroom. Provide time for the students to examine these books to learn how they are designed and how the authors use titles, text, and illustrations to lay out their pages.

2. Make an alphabet chart with the children. As a group, the children could write the letters of the alphabet in a column on a long sheet of paper to use for brainstorming words for the book.

3. As a group, ask the children to identify words beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Help the children write the words on the chart.

4. Help each child to select one letter of the alphabet. (The teacher should supervise the activity to make certain that every letter of the alphabet is chosen.)

5. Distribute paper and crayons. Each child should select one word that begins with the letter he has chosen. The child should write that word on his sheet of paper and draw a picture that represents that word. (The children may need assistance to write the words.)

6. Help the children to compile their pages in alphabetical order.

7. Photocopy the pages so that each child can have a complete alphabet book. Bind the pages to form a book. Teachers may wish to bind the books by tying the pages with yarn or by placing the pages in 3-ring notebooks.

Assessment: Select letters randomly and ask children to identify words that begin with those letters.
