SORTS FOR EMERGENT- ALPHABET

SORTS FOR EMERGENT- ALPHABET

Directions For Font Sorts 7 - 9

Young children should learn about the alphabet in many ways. They need to learn to recite it, identify letters ? both capitals and lower case, produce letters, and learn the sounds associated with letters. One challenge for learning to identify letters is the fact that letters are written in many different print styles or fonts. Here are directions for using four sorts that ask students to match capitals and lower case print styles. See chapter 4 in Words Their Way: Word Study Phonics, Vocabulary and Spelling which describes the emergent stage and more alphabet activities in detail. Similar sorts, as well as additional sorts and activities for emergent learners, can be found in the supplemental book: Letter and Pictures Sorts for Emergent Spellers.

E Sort 7 - 9. Font Sorts for A/B, D/G/E, and M/N/H

All of these sorts work the same way. Display all the letters in a sort so children can see them. Establish headers for each category using a familiar print stye and say something like this: Here is a capital A and here is a lower case A. Then model how to sort the rest of the letters by saying something like this, Here is another capital A but it looks a little different. This A has fat lines (Or curly lines or shadows) and is sort of leaning to the side ? but it is still an A! I am going to put it under this capital A. Continue to sort with the students help and point out features of the print that might be confusing. Encourage children to talk about the visual characteristics of the letters. After sorting leave up the headers and scramble the rest of the letters to resort. Students can be given their own set of letters to sort independently with a partner or in a center. Send students on letter hunts around the room looking for examples of the same letters and in newspapers or other printed materials where they can cut out the letters or highlight them with colored markers.
