Title: Making Words

Title: Making Words

Making Words is an activity in which children arrange letter cards to spell words. As they make words using letter cards, they review and practice phonics and spelling concepts (Cunningham & Cunningham, 1992; Gunning, 1995).

Grade: 3

IRA/NCTE Standard:

Standard 6: Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and nonprint texts.

Objective: The students will use a set of letter cards to make words.

Materials Needed:

• Copies of the letter sheet included with this lesson. You will need one sheet for each student in the class.

• An envelope or small plastic bag for each child to store his or her letter cards

• Scissors for each child

Procedure:

1. Tell the students that in today’s Making Words activity, you will give them letter cards and they will be seeking a mystery word that relates to their current science unit. (The word is temperature but keep this word a secret from the students!) The students’ task is to make words using letters contained in a word taken from their science vocabulary.

2. Give each child a copy of the letter sheet included with this lesson. Ask the students to cut the blocks apart so that they can use the letter cards to make words.

3. Display one set of the letter cards for the word in alphabetical order on the chalk tray (a, e, e, e, m, p, r, r, t, t, u). Name the letter cards with the children and help the children separate the letter cards into two categories, consonants and vowels.

4. Tell the children to manipulate their letter cards to spell two-letter words and to then write the words on a sheet of paper. After spelling all possible two-letter words, the children should make and write three-letter words and then words with four letters.

1. The children should continue to write longer words and record them on their papers. Provide time for the children to share their lists of words with their classmates.

2. Encourage children to use all of their letter cards to spell the “big secret word.” The teacher may need to help some children form the big secret word, temperature.

Assessment: As the children made words, they were asked to write their words on a sheet of paper. These papers can be collected and used as an assessment.
