Below are the 8 Ways to start a sentence and how to modify sentences from those overused #1s to more interesting #2's -> #8's! These are not in any particular order
List the first words of your sentences and label them with the correct sentence starter #. Then, revise the #1's and the sentences where you've used a SS# more than once in that paragraph.
1 - Subject Openers - A, An, The, Pronouns (I, We, You, He, She, It, They), PPA (My, Our, Your, His, Hers, Its, Theirs), This, That, These, Those, ANY Common or Proper Noun (Dog, Billy, The Eiffel Tower) and Names
EX ? 1 - She walked down the hall. 1 - Pizza is my favorite food. 1 - Maria is a rockstar.
2 - Prepositional phrases (Locations in space or time)
EX: 2 - During class, she walked down the hall.
2 - After school, pizza is my favorite snack.
2 - While playing Guitar Hero, Maria is a rockstar
3 - (-ly) adverbs ? When, where, how something happens
EX: 3 - Quickly, she walked down the hall. 3- Surely, pizza is my favorite snack. 3 - Clearly, Maria is a rockstar
4 - -ing verbs/actions
EX: 4 - Talking with her friend, she walked down the hall. 4 - Eating pizza is my favorite mealtime. 4 - Rocking out is what Maria does best.
5 - Causal Word/Clausal ? Subordinate conjunctions ? Although, When, Then, If, Since, Because, For, etc
EX: 5 - If she hurried, she'd walk down the hall in time. 5 - When I eat pizza, my belly is happy. 5 ? Because Maria works hard in class, she is a rockstar.
6 - Very Short Sentence DO NOT USE except SPARINGLY in Narrative stories only!
EX: She walked. I ate pizza. She rocks.
7 - ed Verb
EX: 7 - Hurried, she ran down hallway. 7 - Contented, I put the last slice in my mouth. 7 Excited, Maria rocked on.
8 - Begin with at least 2 good DESCRIPTIVE and SENSORY adjectives
EX: 8 ? Blurry, battered lockers sped by as she walked down the hall.
8 - Warm, gooey cheese stretched off my favorite pizza as I ate it.
8 - Loud, angry music blared as Maria rocked out.
