|1) Be able to recgnize the letters of the alphabet |

|2) Be able to write the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet |

|3) Be able to sound out each letter |

|4) Be able to write his or her name |

|5) Be able to construct words using letters |

|6) Be able to name objects in both the home and the classroom |

|(5)Reading/print awareness. The student demonstrates knowledge of concepts of print. The student is expected to: |

|know the difference between capital and lowercase letters (K-1); |

|Reading/letter-sound relationships. The student uses letter-sound knowledge to decode written language. The student is expected to: |

|(A)  name and identify each letter of the alphabet (K-1); |

|understand that written words are composed of letters that represent sounds (K-1); |

|Reading/vocabulary development. The student develops an extensive vocabulary. The student is expected to: |

|Identify words that name persons, places, or things and words that name actions (K-1). |

|Writing/spelling/penmanship. The student develops the foundations of writing. The student is expected to: |

|write his/her own name and other important words (K-1); |

|(B) write each letter of the alphabet, both capital and lowercase (K); |

|Procedures: |

|Each week should focus on one letter of the alphabet. Start with the letter A and continue to Z until the whole alphabet has been gone |

|through. After the students learn the sounds that the letter makes, each morning the teacher will write up words on the board that start |

|with that letter. The students will be provided a letter sheet with the letter, the sound it makes, and a few simple words that they will |

|go over every morning. There are a bunch of activities to do during the unit. The first activiy the student will complete is a coloring |

|sheet for each letter. The coloring sheet will have the uppercase and lowecase letter which the students will color. The students will |

|also have to color in the pictures on that sheet a certain color based on the letter it starts with. Another activity the student will |

|accomplish during this unit is a brouchre about a letter they choose. The will have to include the written uppercase and lowercase letter,|

|pictures, words, and names that start with that letter. The last activiy the stuednts will have to do is a worksheet. They will be given |

|a short word and fill in the missing blanks |

|Ongoing throughout the school year. 1hour at the beginning of the school day. |

|There will be many parts of an assessment given to students throughout the year. The student’s will have to write the alphabet many times.|

|The fill in the blank worksheets will also be an assessments of the students knowledge of the letters in the alphabet. The students will |

|also be assessed on their brochures that they do during the school year. |
