Strategy - Western Michigan University

Strategy: Making Words Strategy

Appropriate Grade Level: First Grade

Procedures/Steps:

Each student manipulates a set of six to eight letters to construct words dictated by the teacher.

Each lesson begins with two letter words, chosen by the teacher and ends with a word using all letters called the “mystery word”.

Students must figure out what this word is.

Teacher produces set of word cards like those words students just made so that student can identify beginnings, endings, and

spelling patterns.

Students then transfer words different from those in lesson but have same spelling patterns

Comments and/or tips:

I found this to be a very creative way for students to learn spelling patterns. This strategy allows students to construct words,

using a tactile modality. I enjoyed the incorporation of this modality, compared to reciting spelling tests for student’s to

complete.
