Build your word wall and encourage students to use it!
Word Up!
Let your students create your word wall by giving them each a copy of the Word Up! Bookmark (I recommend photocopying on cardstock). Instruct students to copy down words they are unsure of OR powerful words from their nightly reading. Encourage students to use context clues within the text to define their words (model the process with them and practice in class). Tell students that sometimes the context clues are not enough, and readers have to look up words. You can choose to instruct your students to use a print dictionary or the computer/smart devices to look up their word.
