Many of us have the natural inclination of staying home more often, snuggled up in the blanket, watching movies and snacking on popcorn. The onset of winter is a perfect time for feeding the spirit and nurturing our soul as we look back to the past months and look forward to the coming months… a time to reflect, refocus, recharge and reinvent ourselves. An important aspect of this introspective reflection is Gratitude. We need to be thankful for all that we have, it may not be all that you want but it is all that you need. Another important aspect is ‘Learning from the past’, you have to look back in order to understand the things that lie ahead. Refocus includes changing a few things in your mind and vision, releasing a few things and setting a few boundaries. Looking at your reactions of why and how you responded to past occurrences are important parts of our growth and recovery. It helps us realize that past grievances have served their purpose and there’s no need to dwell on them thus helping us to let go of anger and resentment.By using the tools of the Al-Anon program, we can recharge and reinvent. Accepting that we need to change ourselves brings us humility, serenity and joy. The slogan that really helped me to treat the past as the past and venture on a new road to constructive action is "How Important Is It?" “It’s not important for me to comment on everything I hear. It is important for me to let go and let others make decisions for themselves.” Hope For Today page.142Asking how important something is, helps me refocus on myself. Will I remember this in a week? A month? A year? What do I want from this particular argument? Do I want that righteous feeling of pointing out where people have done things wrong or do I want peace?Focusing on this slogan, has strengthened my gratitude, has allowed me to detach more easily, reinforcing kindness and love for others, and directed me towards forgiving others and myself. It also helped me set healthy boundaries "what I will not allow or not accept." Time always have something to offer us: the past – a lesson, the present – an opportunity to live and the future – hope to grow. As we journey into the remaining portions of the year, reflect, refocus, recharge and reinvent yourself. Never regret a day in your life as good days give you happiness, bad days give you experience. Make the second part of the year so amazing that the first half of the year gets jealous…. “Just for today I will look for ways to enjoy life – stop by a garden, try a new hobby, or call a good friend. I can look for humor. I can savor love. I can explore something new. Maybe just for today, I’ll try standing on my head to see if I like the view.” Courage to Change (B-16), page 274Warm regardsAngelKindly inform me should you have an email address, and future copies of the Loners letters will be emailed to you. Please visit our national website .za. It is updated regularly with various Newsletters, Loners letters and other information. The opinions expressed in this letter were strictly those of the person who gave them. Take what you like and leave the restI AM A GRATEFUL AL-ANON MEMBERI had a rich up bringing - rich with material things but our home had no love, no understanding and no compassion. All we had was alcohol and with it came fear; fear of sounds, fear for footsteps, fear for being me and I didn't know how to be myself. I did most things out of fear making it worse or pleasing people to keep the peace. School was an escape but the hours were too short. When I reached matric, I didn't think I would pass and worried what would become of me. Since I was not allowed out on my own, I would not be allowed to work. With that seeming like imprisonment, I thought the only way out was marriage.I was introduced to my partner in September and 6 months later in April we were married. I didn't care how or where I would live as long as I was out of my parent’s home. The first six months of marriage was unbelievable. We were a small happy family and things were just great. When I was about to have my first baby, my partner changed jobs and with that came a huge change in our lives. Alcohol from being occasional had become frequent and this frightened me as I did not want to go backwards. This was not what I had bargained for.As God had his plan, my parent got sober in AA shortly after my wedding and was the very person to introduce my partner and me to this wonderful fellowship of AA and Al-Anon.I am extremely blessed to have found this program very early in my marriage. Al-Anon has given me a life worth living. It has taught me how to live, how to pray, how to be me, how to find spirituality. It's a simple living program and I do it one day at a time, mostly keeping it simple and letting go and letting God take care. How do I live and allow others the dignity to live their own lives? The Al-Anon program has made it possible for me to be able to do this. Our program is made up of 36 principles and to practice this I attend as many meetings as I can. Who do I thank for the rich and wholesome living? First I thank the God of my understanding and then I give thanks to our co-founders Lois and Ann B and Bill as well. If Bill didn't seek help, Lois would not have recognized her need for help. Bill actually put the whole program on paper Al-Anon has adopted many ideas. Bill and Louis were inspired by God most definitely to have given us this wonderful program of AA and Al-Anon. Lois tireless efforts and vision made Al-Anon the strong organization it is today and we continue to attract members through our message of hope and renewal. My message to everyone is be gentle with yourself when moving through your healing journey. There are no quick fixes, healing takes time, honour your process and trust that it is in you to step into a brighter expression of yourself. Healing doesn't mean the damage never existed, it means the damage no longer controls our lives. The world doesn't want to be saved, it wants to be loved. I believe that's how I'll save it. I like to keep things simple, it keeps me close to the God of my understanding who is my bestie, my soulmate, my north star. God flows through me and my payback is always to remember what God would want of me and that is be service of any kind to others. {Submitted by Ika, Belvedere AFG}left5080NATIONAL CONVENTION 2020 DURBAN, KWA-ZULU NATAL DATE : 10-12th APRIL 2020 With less than 9 months to go, excitement is definitely in the air as all portfolio committees are hard at work.
