Fisherman spots body - Pkg

Late Friday evening, rumors spread that a body was spotted along the coastline off Buccoo. Local fishermen assisted Coast Guards and police in an effort to find the body. According to the fisherman who spotted The body, it was clad in blue jeans, and white jersey with red stripes in front.

A fisherman who prefers to remain anonymous was fishing last Friday evening. He said while at sea, he recognized an object a good way off but just dismissed it as a log. However upon investigation he realized exactly what it was.

He stated that he returned to land to get further assistance and thanks to a villager whose son was employed with the coast guard, he was able to put the necessary requirements in place to contact the coast guard and police

The eyewitness noted that he is under the attack from many since they question why he did not bring the body to land. However he clarified the matter

He stressed he is deeply saddened at the situation since he lapsed in not taking a position so the body can be easily found. He was certain that if it was earlier in the day, he would have found the body.

TRHA on Flu – use shots from swine flu

Secretary of Health and Social Services, Mr. Albert Pilgrim, has expressed concern about the “swine flu” epidemic. Via press release, Mr. Pilgrim said “We do not know where the swine flu virus will lead and we are concerned about the potential connection with the outbreak in other countries, particularly with respect to visitors coming to our shores in Tobago. Although, there have been no reported cases in Tobago, we are treating this issue with the seriousness it deserves.”

The release went on to say that the Division of Health and Social services will be working very closely with the Ministry of Health in strengthening precautionary measures to enhance the monitoring of Swine Flu in the country. Further, the Division is presently examining ways of stepping up its surveillance and control systems in Tobago. The release stated that a public awareness programme will be implemented that will assist in mitigating and containing Swine Flu introduction in the country.

Finance Secretary on Economy

Secretary for Finance and Enterprise Development, Dr. Anselm London today reported on the state of Tobago’s economy and his projections for the coming months. Mr. London said that the tourism sector has undergone some reduction in its growth rate, given the reduction of international tourist’s arrivals.

He stated that the Tobago House of Assembly is not waiting for the rest of the world economy to pick up. He stressed that they are at present taking proactive initiatives. He continued that although there were adjustments to the national budget across the board, Tobago continues to maintain activity in it’s development programs.

Dr. London pointed out that there will be some turbulence in our economy. He however stressed that it is very premature to use words like meltdown or guava season.

THA and Clergy Pkg

Meanwhile the Tobago House of Assembly today met with representatives of the religious community throughout Tobago.

Pastor Egbert Brebnor of the Marantha Christian Christian Assembly said that although the church has been doing its part to educate and train young persons, there is however the need for the THA to do more with respect to Financial Assistance. He said that at present his church has sent several young persons to study abroad with assistance from Trinidad.

At a projected cost of 11 million dollars, the new tennis facilities at Shaw Park, will be the hub for regional and international tournaments and will not only serve the upcoming Caribbean Games.
