The Roaring Twenties

Dictionary Definition of “Roaring”: (of a period of time) characterized by optimism, buoyancy, or excitement: the roaring twenties.

The term “Roaring” is frequently used to describe the decade of the 1920s. This decade, following the end of World War One, the worst war in world history to that point, was characterized in the United States as an era of great change and progression. Society threw off the constraints of Victorian Era society and embraced the new, more modern, 20th century.

Historians though, recognize that the 1920s was characterized as a clash of culture – the new and changing attitudes on the one hand and traditional values and nostalgia on the other.

Based on the research you conducted for your WebQuest, would you consider the 1920s to be a decade that “roared” or a decade that was trying to hold on to the traditions and values of the past?
