globe. Formal discussions and oral presentations are also requirements of the course.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to: Apply critical reading strategies to increase understanding of texts Organize bi-weekly Evidence Student Portfolios Use rubrics to assess their own writing and the writing of others Keep organized assignments in an Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) Become an improved test taker

Classroom Rules: Cooperate with your teacher and Classmates Respect the Rights and Property of Others Carry Out Your Student Responsibilities Room C17 is a No Cussing Zone No gum, food, candy, or drinks (except water) No electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods or MP3 players during class time unless told otherwise by instructor for educational purposes

be held until guardians pick it up. (Documentation 2)

Textbook: McDougal Little's Modern World History: Patterns of Interaction

Expectations for Students: Students are expected to be prepared to learn by having all necessary supplies, being respectful, participating, maintaining the learning environment by 100% follow through, and encouraging each other to excel.

Academic Grade: A student's grade is determined by a composite score of weighted assignment categories. Together, these create an overall percentage of total points earned. Grade percentages are calculated on the following scale:

Grade Scale A+ = 97-100% A = 94-96% A- = 90-93%

B+ = 87-89% B = 84-86% B- = 80-83%

C+ = 77-79% C = 74-76% C- = 70-73%

D+ = 67-69% D = 64-66% D- = 60-63%

F = 0-59%

Assignment Categories and Weights Writing (30%) Tests and Quizzes (30%) Class work & Homework (30%) Participation and Citizenship (10%)

Excused Absence Make-up Work: All make-up work including tests and quizzes with an excused absence cleared by the front office will be accepted for full credit, per the guidelines established by district policy.

Unexcused Make-up Work: One-day late assignments are penalized 10 points. Assignments turned in two days late or more will receive half credit and no more. If an assignment is missing, students will receive a 20% (F) in the grade book. The instructor reserves the right to assign 0% credit for assignments undone to a student consistently failing at citizenship.

Citizenship & Participation Grade: Students earn their citizenship and participation grades through attendance, behavior, and upholding C.L.A.S.S. expectations for each grading period (i.e. progress reports, quarters, or semesters). The instructor will use an educational application (app) on a Samsung Tablet day by day to organize and quantifiably keep track of student participation and citizenship points. Scores enter grade book towards end of semester.

Academic Honesty: Assignments are to be the student's own work. Final products must be individually genuine. Plagiarism, (especially in student essay assignments), which is the passing off of another's work as your own, whether in part or in whole, is a violation of CVHS School Policy. Any student who out rightly commits plagiarism will receive an "F" for the assignment with no chance for makeup; his or her parent/s will be contacted, and an academic referral will be filed with both the student's counselor and assistant principal.

Discipline Plan: First offenses will result in a student-teacher one on one session. Second offense will result in parent contact. Third offenses will result in a two-day suspension from class and parent/teacher conference. Any additional offenses will result in an administrative referral and require a meeting between student, parent, teacher(s), counselor, and possibly an assistant principal in the front office. Documentation practices will be enforced by the teacher to keep track of offenses if further disciplinary action should be required.

Educational Videos : DVDs and video clips are often useful to give students a visual representation of academic content. A variety may be shown in this class. Keep in mind all video usages will be used for academic purposes only.

Restroom Policy: Students will be given five restroom passes per semester. In a two semester system, this means students will receive a total of ten restroom passes for the school year. Before students are dismissed the instructor will initial each pass, then the student may proceed to the restroom. When students use up all passes, they will not be given anymore. Extra Credit Opportunity: At the end of the semester, students may receive 10points of extra credit for every un-used restroom pass.

Minimum Grading Policy: The instructor assigns no 0s to students unless a student has demonstrated a careless attitude towards his or her academic efforts day in and day out. In Aeries online, the grade book the public will view will show 0 missing assignments because the lowest grade they will receive will be a 20% conversion based on total points possible for any given assignment even if assignment/s are missing. Students must remain vigilant to know that 20s symbolize a missing assignment in the grade book as checked on Aeries. Bi-Weekly Evidence Portfolios: Portfolios will be due every two weeks and will include assigned class work and homework written on the front board. They will worth 100-140 points each and will count for 30 percent of the student's grade. All assignments must be stamped for completion and organized in proper order accompanied by a Cover Sheet before the portfolio is checked to be "ON TIME." for full credit. (30% of grade) Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN): Students will keep an organized table of contents as well as chronologically organized assignments in a class notebook. Notebooks should be 3 Subject Notebooks in size, nothing smaller. Student work in ISNs must be complete and ready to be graded for each notebook check. (30% of grade) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
