9th Grade World History Syllabus 2018-2019Mr. TorresE-mail: otorres@Room 135Office Hours: Daily 7:45 - 8:30 am 3:30 – 4:00 pm(Students needing extra help will be required to schedule an appointment.)TEXTBOOK: Modern World History – Patterns of Interaction, Holt McDougal, 2012.Textbook will be provided by the school for the students use within the classroom. Lessons are often posted online for the students to use to complete assignments.CONTENT: Modern World History is a journey though time into the birth and development of modern society. We will be focusing on geography, economy, government, military, foreign affairs, and the people who had a hand in shaping modernity as we know it today. The class will begin by look at the events that prompted the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and culminate with a comprehensive review of present times. Each assignment will be based and guided by the Florida Content Standards for 9th Grade Social Studies. INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY:Different forms of instructional methods will be used throughout the school year. Students are going to be involved in lecture, class discussion, projects, text based assessments, and student- centered activities. I expect all students to take notes during classroom lecture and discussion. Students will work independently as well as in group dynamic in order to facilitate creative thinking and peer learning/interaction.CLASSROOM STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to be in class and seated when the bell rings as well as to be prepared for the class and daily activities. (Students who are not ready and seated by this time will be considered to be late to class)RESPECT for both teacher and fellow classmates is expected from all students, anything else will not be tolerated.Classwork is expected to be completed in class. (Whatever is not finished will be added as homework)Be prepared every day. (Have the necessary materials)Assignments are to be completed on time and on the expected date. (No late assignments or makeup without a valid excuse)Students will be shown and are expected to show absolute respect for the personal believes/views and opinions of others within the classroom. Anything less will not be tolerated and is strictly frowned upon. Failure to comply will be met with disciplinary action.CLASSROOM RULES:Be prepared for class. (All materials are requited every class) If not met, student will be considered unprepared.Personal conversation, disruption or yelling will not be tolerated in the classroom.Raise your hand for questions, requests or answers. Cellphone usage is not allowed unless instructed by the teacher for class related use ONLY. If the student fails to follow this rule the device (CELLPHONE) will be confiscated by the teacher and sent to the office for the remainder of the day and only the parent/guardian will be allowed to retrieve it.Restrooms are to be used during lunch time and in between classes. Students will receive three bathroom tickets at the beginning of each quarter. If a student needs to use the restroom during class instruction time, they must raise their hand to ask permission and cash in one of their bathroom tickets. No more than 3 tickets will be issued each quarter. Students must manage their time wisely. Cumulative Exams/Tests will be announced with at least one week prior to the date that will be administered, as well as rubric and study guide. Study guide will include the tested areas to be covered and the format of the test (essay, multiple choice, true and false, short answer, etc.)Grading:Grading ScaleCourse Grade Breakdown by weight90-100 A80-89 B70-79 C60-69 D59 and below FTests = Six letter Grades (x6)Quizzes = Three letter Grades (x3) Classwork/Homework = One letter Grade (x1)Projects = Will vary based on difficulty and length of the assignment (Between x5-x7) *Important – Classwork and homework will be graded at my discretion. Thus, it is extremely important that the student complete all assignments as I will pick and choose which assignments will actually be graded, and which will be for educational/informational purposes only. Late Work: Late assignments are NOT going to be accepted unless the student provides an excused absence. If this requirement is met, then the student will have 72 hours (2 days) to turn in any late work to be graded. After this period has passed no grades will be issued. Extreme cases/situations will be considered at the teacher’s complete discretion. Absences and Tardiness: Excused absences will be allowed 72 hours to turn in all missed work providing that the student had the admin signed by the teacher. Late tests and quizzes must be rescheduled with the teacher and made up within 72 hours of the students return to school. Failure to do so will result in a zero. Excessive unexcused absences are grounds for receiving No Credit for the course. Keep in mind that one (1) day of absence counts as two (2) due to block scheduling.(Make up can ONLY be provided with student’s excused absence and with a 72 hour dead line)Academic Dishonesty:Academic honesty is highly expected and encouraged by the teacher for each and every student in the classroom. Academic dishonesty is any type of cheating that occurs in relation to a formal academic exercise. It can include. Plagiarism: The adoption or reproduction of ideas or words or statements of another person without due acknowledgment.Cheating: use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information or study aids. Fabrication: falsification or invention of any information. Assisting: helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty. Tampering: altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and/or documents. Plagiarism: representing the words or ideas of another person as one’s own.
