Welcome to World History with Miss Park!

In this course, we will study major turning points in the shaping of the modern world, focusing on the late eighteenth century to the present. We will examine the political, economic, and social developments of Western and non-western human civilization, so that you can understand the rise of democratic ideas and the history of current world problems.

By the end of the year, you will be an expert on the evolution of the democratic ideas of the Greeks and Romans, the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment, the rise of nationalism and imperialism, the World Wars and their consequences, totalitarianism and other various “isms,” and modern times. You will develop critical thinking and decision-making skills, so that you will acquire knowledge and apply what you learn to your own personal history, as well as the history of our community, nation, and the world.

Finally, since students learn best by “doing,” rather than simply observing, you will be required to participate actively in the learning process by reading, writing, and contributing to discussions, debates, historical simulations, interactive group activities, and group projects.

TEXTBOOK

Ellis, Elisabeth Gaynor and Anthony Esler. World History: The Modern World. Boston, MA: Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007. The textbook must be covered AT ALL TIMES.

GRADING POLICY

Points will be earned in the following categories and distributed based upon the following approximate percentages:

HOMEWORK & PROJECTS 40%

QUIZZES & EXAMS 40%

FINAL EXAM 20%

Letter grades will be based upon the student’s total point percentage, and the following approximate scale will be used to determine quarterly, semester, and final grades:

90-100% = A

80-89% = B

70-79% = C

60-69% = D

0-59% = F

HOMEWORK POLICY

1. All homework and selected class assignments will be checked for completion on the day it is due. You must keep these assignments until the day of the exam.

2. On the day of the exam, a homework packet will be collected.

3. This homework packet will consist of 5 assignments randomly chosen by Miss Park.

4. Each assignment will be worth 20 points, for a total of 100 points per packet.

5. Each assignment must be completed on time and be of quality work to receive the 20 points.

6. An assignment that was late will be docked 1 point for each day it is late.

7. You are responsible for your own homework and class assignments.

8. If you are absent on the day the assignment is due, you must submit the assignment to Miss Park the day you return. Once your absence has been cleared by Attendance, Miss Park will deem this assignment as completed on time. If your absence is not cleared (meaning you were truant), you will receive a zero on that assignment.

HONOR CODE

The MHS Honor Code will be strictly enforced in this class. Students must do their OWN work in their OWN words on all assignments. At no time are they to share work with classmates or collaborate (work together), unless given prior permission by Miss Park. Students who plagiarize or cheat on an assignment, quiz, or exam will receive NO CREDIT (zero points) for that particular assignment, quiz, or exam. Offending students will also be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with Marina High School’s Honor Code Policy.

MAKE UP POLICY

It is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed by checking this class’s website and make up all assignments within the time frame given by Miss Park (usually ONE WEEK). A missed quiz or exam must be made up either before or after school or at an appointed time. You will have a maximum of five days only to make up a missed exam, at which point you will earn a zero for that missed exam. If you fail to appear for a scheduled make up date (unexcused), you will earn a zero. If you are truant on the day of a missed quiz or exam, you will earn a zero. Projects are expected to be on time, as the due dates will be given in advance and also posted on the class website and on the white board. Late projects will lose points (determined by the teacher) each day they are late.

EXTRA CREDIT POLICY

Each student may earn extra credit points that make up no more than 2% of the total points per quarter. These points will be added to the quarter grade at the end of the quarter. Extra credit can be earned in the following ways:

APPROXIMATE # OF POINTS GIVEN

1. Parent attendance at Back-To-School Night 5 points

2. Political cartoon analysis 5 points

3. Newspaper/magazine article analysis 5 points

4. Historical Movie or TV review 5 points

5. Special Independent Projects 5-25 points

Extra credit worksheets can be found on the class webpage. You must download and print the worksheet (or, if you do not have a printer, simply rewrite the questions onto a separate sheet of paper) and adequately complete the assignment to receive credit.

Park Platinum is the currency used Room 113. Each Park Platinum counts as one point toward any exam, except the final exam. For instance, if you earned a score of 88 on your exam, you may add 2 Park Platinum to raise your exam score to a 90. You may not add more than what is required to receive a perfect score. Park Platinum is rare and when given the opportunity (say, during a review game or activity), you must do your best to earn it. Students are responsible for submitting Park Platinum on exam review days.
