Read the passage below.

THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR HAS ENDED. ENGLAND FINDS HERSELF IN SOLE POSSESSION OF NORTH AMERICA. COLONISTS WANT TO MOVE WEST OF THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS TO THE NEW, INEXPENSIVE LANDS WON DURING THE WAR. THE INDIANS ARE VIOLENTLY OPPOSED TO THIS INVASION OF THEIR LAND AND THREATEN TO KILL ALL COLONISTS WHO TRY TO SETTLE (PONTIAC’S REBELLION). TO PROTECT THESE COLONISTS BRITAIN WOULD NEED TO SEND OVER 10,000 SOLDIERS INTO THE FRONTIER. THE COST OF THESE SOLDIERS WOULD JUST ADD TO THE STAGGERING DEBT (140,000,000 POUNDS) THAT BRITAIN ALREADY HAS FROM THE COST OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR. TO REDUCE THE DEBT AND TO PROTECT HER COLONIAL CITIZENS BRITAIN BEGINS TO STRICTLY ENFORCE THE NAVIGATION ACTS (BRITAIN HAS BEEN VERY LENIENT IN ENFORCING THESE ACTS IN THE PAST), AND PARLIAMENT PASSES TWO NEW LAWS: THE PROCLAMATION OF 1763 AND THE STAMP ACT.

16. What was the situation England found itself in after winning the French and Indian War?
