Puyallup School DistrictSTEM Showcase: Inventions ChecklistThis is a checklist to help you plan / complete your design process. All but the final two items on the checklist are part of your working journal. Judges are looking for a “working journal” when they judge your invention project. A working journal is a place where you write down everything you do related to your project. You should write in your journal every day you work on your project. Everything should be in your own writing. If you make a mistake, cross it out. Don’t worry about erasing and making everything “perfect.”Checklist:Brainstorm a list of ideas for possible inventions that would solve real world problem or need.Select an idea from your brainstormed list.Research your idea. Take notes in your journal. Do not copy or print documents. Do not use Wikipedia as a primary source (minimum of 3 sources).Explain how your invention would be used, identify the intended audience/user of the invention, and why is it important to you or to society.Decide on your design for your model.Draw your design, make sure you draw your model from two or more viewpoints. Label all of your parts.Identify the materials and costs of your design.Determine what data you will be collecting to test your design.Decide how you will set up your testing, you may even want to draw pictures in your journal recording your plan.List the step by step procedures you will follow to complete the test of your prototype. Conduct your test/experiment.Record the observations/results in a mathematical display (graphs, charts, etc.).Record any needs for changes to your design, including drawings, materials, etc. Make the necessary changes to your model (Do this as many times as is needed).Run your test again and record your results (Do this as many times as is needed).Write your conclusion: Explain and argue your findings using claims, evidence, and reasoning.Create your display board. Your display board is considered to be your final copy.Practice for your oral discussion with the judges.Puyallup School DistrictSTEM Showcase: Inventions Presentation BoardGrade:Project Number: StandardsDeveloping (1)Competent (2)Proficient (3)PointsReal World Needs & ProblemsInvention is not addressing a real world need or problemInvention is questionable in addressing a real world need or problemInvention addresses a real world need or problem /3Invention Functionality Invention is not functional nor efficientInvention is questionable in its function and efficiencyInvention is functional and solves the problem efficiently /3Invention PracticalityInvention is not practical in terms of size, cost, material, etc. for the problem being solvedInvention is questionable in its practicality in terms of size, cost, material, etc. for the problem being solvedInvention is practical in terms of size, cost, material, etc. for the problem being solved /3Description of Parts and Components Minimally described or only some parts/components describedPartially described or only some parts/components describedThoroughly & completely described /3Design ProcessMinimally described the design process: design, adjust, test, redesign, re-testPartially described the design process: design, adjust, test, redesign, re-testClearly described the design process: design, adjust, test, redesign, re-test /3Function of PartsMinimally described functionFunction of some parts are identifiedFunction of each part is identified /3Visual Aids & DiagramsVisual aids and diagrams are unclearSome visual aid and diagrams are unclearVisual aids are diagrams are clear and promote understanding /3Developing PrototypePrototype is minimally constructed and/or does not match design specificationsPrototype is partially constructed or may be missing some specsPrototype is constructed to design specifications in journal /3Total Points(24 Possible Points) /24Puyallup School DistrictSTEM Showcase: Inventions Journal & Oral Presentation RubricGrade: Project Number:StandardJudging CriteriaPointsResearch/Journal Work Research evidence provided that no similar process or product exists OR documented similar designs to make own improvementsEntire process is documented /2Design ProcessReal world needs & problems identifiedHandwritten research notes and sourcesMaterials & costsDiagrams and descriptionsProcedure to create your inventionTest and record your resultsIdentify any changes to the original designInvention benefits /8Oral Presentation(2 pts. each)The design process is explained clearlyStudent demonstrates exceptional knowledge of science content and can analyze, evaluate, and reflect on their model design.Student can speak to why this invention is important to them or to society.Answers the judges questions with appropriate speed, volume, and expression; student is having a conversation with judges, not merely presenting a rehearsed speech. /8Total Points(18 Points Possible) /18 ................
