Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the eastern and northern hemisphere. It covers 8.6 % of the Earth's total surface area ( or 29.9 % of its land area) and with approximately 4.73 billion people (2011) , It hosts 60 % of the world's current human population. Asia consists of 48 countries, four dependent and seven unrecognised regions. Asia is broadly dividedinto six sub regions. LOCATION OF ASIA Latitude: Asia is locatedentirely in the Northern Hemisphere, except for a few islands of Indonesia which lie in the Southern Hemisphere. Asia lies between latitudes 10 degree S to 80 degree N. 2. Longitude: Asia lies entirely in the eastern hemisphere. Only a small part of Russia extends into the Western Hemisphere. Asia lies between longitude 25 degree E and 170 degree E .3) Boundaries: Asia is surrounded by three oceans. a) North- Arctic ocean b) East – Pacific Oceanc) South – Indian Ocean In the west, the continent of Asia is separated from Europe by the low Ural Mountains, the Ural River and the Caspian Sea. 4) Coastline: Asia has a relatively smooth coastline with few indentations. Along the east coast is the China Sea, the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan. In the north- east is the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. In the south there are two big bays- the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. 5) Islands: There are many groups of islands in south- east and east Asia. Many of them form island countries. Two Southeast Asian nations, Indonesia and Philippines have more than 20,000 islands between them. Sumatra and Java are large islands of Indonesia. WORKSHEET Q1 Wh at is location of Asia?Q2 Name three oceans which surround Asia. Q 3Name the major island groups of Asia. (Any two) Q4 How many countries are located in Asia?Q5 Which is the largest continent in the world?Q6 What is the population of Asia?Q7 Name the most populated country in Asia. Q8 Which mountain separates Asia from Europe in the west?Q9 Name the two largest islands of Indonesia. TOPIC 2 (Physical features)Asia is a continent of great variety of landforms and climate. Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world and the Mt. Everest (8850m) the highest peak in the world both are in Asia. Physically the continent may be divided into five major physical divisions. They are: The Northern Lowlands The Central Mountainous RegionThe southern Plateaus The Great River Valley The Island Groups of Southeast and East Asia The northern Lowlands: The Northern Lowlands are made up of the Siberian Plain and the Turan Plain .Main rivers of the northern lowlands are Ob , Yenisei and Lena.Lake Baikal (1,637m) the deepest lake of the world is located in these lowlands. It holds 20 % of all fresh lake water on the globe. 2. Central Mountain Region: The central Mountain Belt is a complex system of fold Mountain and plateaus which makes up the core of the mountain system of Asia. Various mountain ranges radiate out from the Pamir knot which is located a little south of the central of Asia. * The Himalayas, Karakoram, Sulaiman and Hindukush, are the major ranges which radiates from the Pamir Knot. * The Himalayas are the highest mountain range in the world. Mt. Everest, the highest peak of the world is part of the Himalayan range.* These mountain ranges have many intermountain plateaus like plateau of Iron, Anatolia, Tibet, Peninsular plateau of India etc. 3. The Southern Plateaus: To the south of the Central Mountain Belt lie the plateaus of South Asia.* The plateau of Tibet also known as Roof of the World, Plateau of Mongolia, Plateau of Arabia and the Peninsular Plateau of India are the most important plateaus of Asia.* Most of these plateaus are formed by very old and crystalline rocks. 4. The Great River Valleys: River Valleys are the most important regions of Asia. They are made up of vast stretches of fertile alluvial plains and are the most thickly populated regions of the world. * The Valley of the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers in Iraq was known as Mesopotamia (“between the rivers “) in ancient times. These rivers flow into the Persian Gulf. * The Valley of the Indus in India and Pakistan is formed by the river Indus and its five tributaries- Ravi, Jhelum, Beas, Satluj and Chenab. The valley covers a large part of Pakistan and Punjab in India. * The Valley of the Ganga- Brahmaputra in India forms an extensive plain stretching almost from the Indus valley in the west to the Brahmaputra in the east. * The Great plain of China is formed by China’s three largest rivers- the Hwang Ho, the Yangtze Kiang and Sikiang. 5. The Island Groups: There are three major island groups- Indonesia, Philippines and Japan. Most of the islands are the unsubmerged parts of Fold Mountains.
