The Magic Of Audrey

Sunday, 15 November 2009

This is a very special look at one of Hollywood’s most memorable and treasured icons, revered for her creative spirit and her

compassion.

She was synonymous with big sunglasses and that Givenchy little black dress, but many are unaware of the extreme hardships

Audrey endured in Nazi-occupied Holland while growing up.

From an early age she studied ballet and acting. Seemingly overnight, the young girl from the chorus line began hitting the

headlines. She became an award-winning screen star and a worldwide sensation starring in films including Roman Holiday,

Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady and Sabrina, that later became classics.

But as in any fairytale, Audrey’s story has its dark side. The horrors of war stayed with Audrey who used her experiences to

help others in need as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The Magic Of Audrey will be repeated on ABC1 – Sunday, November 22 at 3:00pm

I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale

Sunday, 15 November 2009

His big-screen acting career comprised just five movies – but they were five of the greatest films of his generation.

Each earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination and teamed him with some of the most acclaimed actors and directors of the 20th

century.

Between 1972 and 1978, John Cazale co-starred in The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and

The Deer Hunter. Collectively, the films hauled in no less than 40 Oscar nominations – including 14 for Cazale’s co-stars – and

hundreds of millions in box office receipts.

Many of his contemporaries remember him as one of the brightest talents of his day, and he is venerated by some of today’s most

celebrated actors and filmmakers. Yet, just three decades after his promising career ended with his untimely death, actor John

Cazale is largely unknown to the general public.

With this documentary, feature film director Richard Shepard seeks to remedy that disparity. Interspersed with clips from

Cazale’s movies and rarely seen photos and home video, I Kew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale features candid interviews

with a pantheon of Hollywood royalty, including Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Robert De Niro, Richard Dreyfuss, Meryl Streep and

Sidney Lumet, many of whom befriended and worked alongside the Massachusetts-born actor, and one of whom – Streep – fell in love

with him.

The film also includes insights from a younger generation of actors and filmmakers inspired by Cazale, among them Philip Seymour

Hoffman, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi and Brett Ratner, who produced the film.

In addition to exploring Cazale’s stellar filmography, the documentary revisits his roots in theatre. Cazale was discovered by

The Godfather casting director Fred Roos in 1971 at an off-Broadway revival of Line. Coppola immediately saw in Cazale the

potential for what would become his most memorable role – Fredo in The Godfather films.

I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale will be repeated on ABC1 – Sunday, November 22 at 3:45pm

Love Soup: Smoke And Shadows

Tuesday, 17 November 2009 New Series

Love Soup takes an entertaining and provocative look at romance and relationships in the 21st century: quirkily absurd, often

bizarre – always unpredictable.

Is it possible that somewhere out there a perfect partner exists for each of us? If there is an answer, it is sadly lost on

Alice Chenery (Tamsin Greig).

Following on from Series One, Alice is still unattached and undaunted as she continues to navigate the treacherous waters of

Love, in a world where sense and sensitivity seem to have become largely unfashionable. Alice has more to worry about than the

amorous intentions of her driving instructor. Her predatory and possibly lesbian regional manager, Catherine Sumpter, is in town

and has summoned her to a mysterious meeting in her hotel room, where a distinctly potent threat of sexual harassment is in the

air.

Meanwhile, Cleo is adapting restaurant reviews from the internet to rate her latest boyfriend’s performance in bed, but the

tables are turned on her when she discovers Dave has been writing disparaging daily reports of their nightly activities in his

journal. As she struggles to cope with his scathing comments about her performance in bed, Milly finds she is strangely turned

on by a man’s shadow that appears outside the window of her basement flat every night at the same time.

During her seventh attempt at passing her driving test, Alice is hijacked by an armed robber who inadvertently helps her to

pass.

The Wire

Tuesday, 17 November 2009 New Series

The second series of television’s most uncompromising and realistic police drama, HBO’s The Wire, commences tonight with a new

case that, like the first series, focuses on the vagaries of crime and law enforcement in Baltimore.

As the illicit drug war with Avon Barksdale’s (Wood Harris) crew rages on, the action moves from the battered streets and

squalid projects of West Baltimore, to the city’s troubled waterfront.

With an unflinching look at Baltimore’s port workers and unions, the second series chronicles the steady decline of the working

class.

As was the case in the first series the storyline is told from the points of view of both the police and their targets,

capturing a universe of subterfuge and surveillance.

As episodes unfold, police find their workloads expanded to include not only familiar drug dealers, but also a new group of

longshoremen and wiseguys caught up in a major homicide investigation at the city’s shipping port.

Tonight, stigmatized and reassigned to the harbour patrol, Detective Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West) finds the body of a woman

floating in the Baltimore Harbor.

With Barksdale in prison, savvy Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) manages the drug operation while studying for his college course.

Bodie (JD Williams) drives to Philadelphia to make a connection for the Barksdale crew.

Meanwhile, over at the docks, the rank-and-file scrounge for work while union bosses take desperate measures to reinvigorate

business. And a horrible discovery is about to turn the port inside out…

Superhuman: World's Tallest Children

Wednesday, 18 November 2009 Final

The fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking story of the world’s tallest children tells how and why human growth goes awry and

how the human body copes with the strain of disproportionate height.

Filmed in America, Britain and Thailand, it follows the stories of children like 13-year-old Brennan, whose unique gene mutation

won’t allow him to stop growing. Doctors have slowed but cannot stop it. Brennan is 224cm tall and wears a size 21 shoe.

Marley, the 16-year-old Thai teen has a pituitary gland tumour that has caused her abnormal growth to 208cm, but without the

fame from being in the Guinness Book of Records, her family cannot afford the medication to control it.

Her 15-year-old counterpart in Jamaica, Marvadene, is just a half inch smaller than Marley, but she loves her height. She and

her almost as tall sister are known as the ‘twin towers’ by their friends, and she has won a US college basketball scholarship.

9:25pm Final

beached az: The End

beached az began as an online animation called ‘Beached Whale’ and is the story of a whale who finds himself beached on the shores of New Zealand. The clip was then uploaded to YouTube in April 2008, and became a household name among young people the world over.

Following the huge success of the viral video, the ABC commissioned a short TV series of 11 x 1 minute (approx) digital animations, where the whale continues his attempts to get off the beach, meeting some interesting characters along the way.

This week the characters come up with a plan to get the whale ‘de-beached’, but can they all work together to save the day or will the whale be forever ‘beached az’?

Bigger and bolder than before, Russell T Davies’ hit sci-fi series returns for more fun, adventure and excitement with Captain Jack and his alien-fighting team.
