World and Domestic Steel Statistics

With the world production of steel being approximately 781 million tons in 1997, China led the world in steel production making 114 million tons of steel. The other major producers were Japan, the United States, Germany and Russia. Together they account for approximately one half of the world’s production of steel.1 Domestic production accounted for 96 million tons of steel in 1997. Although not the world’s leading producer, the United States is the leading consumer of steel with approximately 113 million tons used in 1997 for the manufacturing of buildings, automobiles, construction industry as well as cans and containers.2
