How Computers Changed the World

by Maharshi Dasari

Imagine a world without computers, a world without the ease of rapid communication, the richness of knowledge at our fingertips, or the limitless opportunities for creativity. It's nearly unbelievable! Without a doubt, computers have transformed the fabric of human existence, redefining every element of our lives. The foundation for modern computing was built by Charles Babbage's "Analytical Engine" and Alan Turing's pioneering work during World War II. However, the first electrical computers were not invented until the mid-twentieth century. Even though these massive devices took up entire rooms, their computational power was far outweighed by today's smartphones. Despite their limitations, they were ground-breaking inventions that laid the groundwork for the subsequent digital revolution. The globe has become a global village in the digital era, and the introduction of computers was the spark for this shift. With the arrival of the internet, distance and time boundaries were broken down, allowing for seamless communication across continents. Email, instant messaging, and social networking platforms have all become ordinary in our lives. Computers' impact on healthcare cannot be underscored. Computers have raised the . . .

End of Symantec Anti-Virus Usage

This August, we are ending our use of Symantec Anti-Virus, as it has been determined to no longer meet our requirements as an effective anti-virus solution. We have moved to the Sophos Interceptor X platform. Much of the university community's computing devices have already been moved over to the new Sophos anti-virus platform (or now commonly referred to as endpoint protection), but not all. Those who work remotely or participate in the hybrid work agreement with the university and do not connect regularly to Lewis University network on campus are encouraged to view what endpoint protection application they are running.

The graphic below shows the Sophos icon indicated with an "S" within a blue shield. This icon is usually at the lower right corner of your Windows operating system (OS), if you click the caret ^ symbol to show hidden icons, or in the upper . . .

To Unsub or Not to Unsub . . .

We all get emails we don't want and cleaning them can be as easy as clicking the `unsubscribe' link at the bottom of the email. But you must always be careful. If you know an email is from a trustworthy source, they must adhere to your request to unsubscribe by law. However, there are unscrupulous people out there and some of those handy little links can cause more trouble than they solve as you may end up giving the sender a lot of information about you, or even an opportunity to infect your computer with malware. Phishing attacks rely on the fact that it's very

easy to fake who and where an email has come from, is super cheap, and easy to get information about you to make things look legitimate or interesting. Regretfully, it's all but impossible to be 100% sure who has sent you an email, so you must be careful. Here are 5 reasons why unsubscribing can be a bad idea. 1. You have confirmed to the sender that your email address is both valid and in use. This means phishing attempts will most likely go up and not down. And, since this is a good . . .

The Effect of Photoshop on Youth by Maharshi Dasari

Photoshop is a tool for art that allows photographers, graphic designers, and digital artists to create visual marvels. Its numerous tools allow for seamless alteration, allowing for the creation of hitherto unthinkable visuals. It provides a blank canvas for limitless creativity, from repairing flaws to boosting colors and is extensively used in the digital age, affecting our perceptions of beauty and aesthetics. While this software has clearly transformed the world of digital imaging, it has also had a dramatic impact on today's subjected youth.

The appeal of digitally edited photos has a dangerous side effect: the illusion of perfection. Today's youth receive constant bombardment with manipulated images via social media platforms and magazines. These photographs frequently depict idealized beauty ideals that are nearly impossible to achieve. As a result, the susceptible brains of today's youth get inundated with false reality, resulting in feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

One of the most severe consequences in the use of Photoshop is the impact on body image. With so many beautiful and sculpted bodies on display, young people frequently compare their appearance to these digitally modified ideals. This constant comparison promotes body dissatisfaction, resulting in a never-ending struggle to achieve an unattainable image of . . .
