OCLC RESOURCE SHARING UPDATE

ALA 2004

Congratulations to ILL on its new section—You’re all STARS!

Congratulations to Joan Stein of Hunt Library, Carnegie Mellon University—this year’s winner of the ALA Virginia Boucher/OCLC Distinguished ILL Librarian Award.

Last but not least, congratulations to OCLC ILL—April 1, 2004 marks OCLC ILL’s 25th anniversary!

If you have questions or comments about this update, please contact Collette Mak at makc@ or the OCLC staff member indicated below.

OCLC Resource Sharing is on the move:

Borrowing and lending are now available through the FirstSearch staff view! Later this summer we plan to add the ability to use custom holdings and batch printing capabilities. When custom holdings is added later this summer if your library currently uses ILL web, this summer would be a great time to move to the new system. We’ve also added a link to the Copyright Clearance Center to help U.S. libraries decide the most effective means of requesting articles. Later this year we’ll be improving the link to support a smoother workflow.

There’s going to be a lot of activity over the next year as we move and improve OCLC Resource Sharing. To stay up-to-date we’ve created OCLC-Sharing-L. We’ll be using OCLC-Sharing-L, ILL-L and ILLiad-L to send regular updates on the migration, ‘sunset’ plans for the current interfaces and enhancements to the new system.

We’ve also built a web site to give you a central location for migration news. The home page for the migration also includes a on-line form to sign up for OCLC-SHARING-L. Here’s the URL:

Open WorldCat Pilot: The Open WorldCat Pilot made 2 million WorldCat records (all WorldCat records with 100 or more holdings) available through Google and, within the last few weeks, to Yahoo! The Open WorldCat pilot marks the first time OCLC has made the unique resources of WorldCat records available outside the traditional library environment. The goal of the Open WorldCat pilot is to point more people—even those who don't typically visit libraries—to library collections for the material they want. The pilot promotes the value and relevance of libraries on a scale far greater than any library or group could achieve alone.

Want to try Open WorldCat? Search for a popular book title such as “Cruelest Miles” followed by “WorldCat” or “Find in a library”

If your library isn’t already participating in Open WorldCat or you’d like more information here’s the URL:

Group Catalog: Groups can now create their group union catalog through WorldCat as an add-on to their WorldCat subscription. Group Catalog allows libraries present their group’s holdings through WorldCat on FirstSearch or through Z39.50. Groups can choose as many groups as they need, for example, a group may be state-wide with subgroups to represent library type, regions, delivery routes, or collection expertise. Library users can search the catalog and easily expand their search to libraries worldwide. Illinois, Florida, Montana and Missouri as well as MERLN and the NationalTransportation Library have all chosen Group Catalog to facilitate access to the library collections of their groups.

OCLC Group Catalog includes all the features of FirstSearch, including authentication, links to OPACs, evaluative content and interaction with OCLC ILL.

For more information contact your OCLC Regional Service Provider.

Union Listing: OCLC's Union List is moving to the MARC 21 Format for Holdings Displays. We’ve heard from individual libraries and from our advisory committees that manual (on-line) union listing activity should be available from multiple access points such as Connexion and the FirstSearch staff view. Our plans are to eventually provide interfaces to allow maintenance of UL data wherever librarians wish to do it.

The SERHOLD to OCLC exchange has almost reached its first anniversary. Since introduction 345 medical libraries have used the SERHOLD to OCLC exchange to update over 253,000 local data records.

Please contact your OCLC Regional Service Provider for more information.

OCLC ILLIAD: OCLC ILLiad 6.4, expected out July 2004, has two important new features—support for Open URL 1.0 and, support for Direct Request. Open URL is a great way for libraries to guide their users to ILLiad to submit requests but the standard supported very few formats. Libraries that requested videos and other formats couldn’t use Open URL. With 6.4 both FirstSearch and now OCLC ILLiad are Open URL 1.0 compliant Interoperability with Direct Request means libraries no longer need to choose between the efficiencies of OCLC Direct Request and OCLC ILLiad—you can have both!

Watch ILLiad-L, ILL-L and OCLC-SHARING-L for updates on OCLC ILLiad 7.0. ILLiad 7.0 is designed for OCLC’s new system. Atlas and OCLC’s goal is to have ILLiad 7.0 available well in advance of the cut over to OCLC’s new system
