FOR RELEASE: DECEMBER 18, 2018

U.S. VOTERS SAY NO WALL AND DON*T SHUT DOWN GOVERNMENT,

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS;

FOCUS ON ISSUES, NOT IMPEACHMENT, VOTERS TELL DEMS 7-1

American voters oppose building a wall on the Mexican border 54 每 43 percent and say 54 每 44

percent the wall is not necessary to improve border security, according to a Quinnipiac

University National Poll released today.

This is the highest level of support for the wall since the independent Quinnipiac (KWINuh-pe-ack) University National Poll first asked the question in November 2016.

Opposition to the wall is 57 每 40 percent among women, 90 每 8 percent among

Democrats. Republicans support the wall 86 每 14 percent. Independent voters are divided as 45

percent support the wall, with 51 percent opposed. Men also are divided as 47 percent support

the wall, with 51 percent opposed. White voters are divided 49 每 50 percent. Opposition is

78 每 16 percent among black voters and 68 每 27 percent among Hispanic voters.

By a wider 62 每 34 percent, American voters oppose shutting down the government

because of funding differences over the wall. Republicans support shutting down the

government over the wall 59 每 33 percent, the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial

group supporting a shutdown.

If there is a shutdown, 51 percent of voters would blame President Donald Trump and

Republicans in Congress more, as 37 percent would blame Democrats in Congress more.

Independent voters would blame Trump and Republicans more than Democrats 48 每 39 percent.

American voters say 81 每 17 percent that border security is an important issue.

※A blunt holiday greeting card for President Donald Trump: Don*t build a border wall

and don*t shut down the government to try to get it done,§ said Tim Malloy, assistant director of

the Quinnipiac University Poll.

American voters say 86 每 12 percent, including 77 每 19 percent among Democrats, that

Democrats in Congress should focus more on other national issues rather than on impeaching

President Trump.

Trump has done his worst job on race relations, 20 percent of voters say, as 19 percent

list immigration, 13 percent say the environment and 12 percent cite health care.

A total of 65 percent of American voters say the nation*s economy is ※excellent§ or

※good,§ while 35 percent say ※not so good§ or ※poor.§

Trump*s policies have helped the economy, 43 percent say, as 30 percent say his policies

have hurt the economy and 25 percent say his policies aren*t making much of a difference.

A total of 75 percent of voters say their financial situation is ※excellent§ or ※good,§ as 24

percent say ※not so good§ or ※poor.§

Their financial situation will get better in the coming year, 38 percent of voters say, as 9

percent say it will get worse and 51 percent say it will stay the same.

The Environment

A total of 69 percent of American voters are ※very concerned§ or ※somewhat concerned§

about climate change. Voters say 50 每 45 percent, including 65 每 32 percent among voters 18 to

34 years old, that climate change will have ※a significant negative effect on the world§ in their

lifetime.

※It*s their world to inherit and it*s clear younger voters see a looming environmental

catastrophe on the horizon,§ Malloy said.

From December 12 每 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,147 voters nationwide with a

margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, including the design effect.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts gold

standard surveys using random digit dialing with live interviewers calling landlines and cell

phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts nationwide surveys and polls in more than a

dozen states on national and statewide elections, as well as public policy issues.
