Weekly Schedule for Tue Oct 6 through Monday Oct 12 What do I do?What are the specific instructions? Where do I find the work or the Assignment? When is it due?WATCH & READWatch the mini-lecture video.Read Unit 2 – Reflective Annotated Bibliography assignment sheet.Tues 10/6CLASS SESSIONOptional Q&A and conference. This week is about choosing what you want to investigate – issues/topics that matter to you as a game designer or someone in the computer industry. We’ll start with some reading and have a Discussion about those readings. Then you’ll pick the general area you want to investigate (social responsibility, cultural appropriation [localization], representations within games, issues within the game development and/or computing industry) by going to our Google folder, clicking on the Unit 2 folder, and finding the folder where you’ll be creating an annotated bibliography about the area you’re interested in – this isn’t a group project, but is instead meant to create a research support group.Tues 10/6READThese four short pieces will give us a place to start looking for an issue you want to dig into. Horti, Samuel. “Do video games have a social responsibility?” “Cultural Issues in Video Games Localization: Balancing Expectations Between the General Public and Core Gamers?” , Damon. “The era of white male games for white male gamers is ending” , Keza. “Not so white, male and straight: the video games industry is changing” a new Post on OpenLab where you respond to these questions:Primary Response: Does the gaming community, or the computer industry in general, have a responsibility to society? If you think so, what do you think that responsibility involves? If you don’t think so, why not?Which area interests you most and why?Title “Responsibility – your name” using Category Unit 2, tag Responsibility.Secondary Response: Use the Comments on the Open Lab to comment on what a couple of people have to say. Your comments should be thoughtful, ask questions, raise new points, suggest other ideas. And they have to be at least 100 words long.I’ve added… Peeps: these are quick replies, the “wow, that’s interesting” kind, a few words. You can do as many of these as you want… just do the other ones, too!Primary Response due Friday Oct 9. (by the way, no option here to not do this. Posts are part of the 10 participation points for each unit.) Secondary response due Mon Oct 12. comment on at least two other people’s posts by adding to the discussion, asking questions, raising new points, etc. These should be thoughtful and at least 100 words long.FIND & WRITEIn our Google Drive in the Unit 2 folder, you’ll find four groups I created based on the four reading. Find the one you’re interested in working in. Open the folder. In the folder, you’ll find a Google Doc titled “Annotated Bibliography.” Open it. You’ll find a couple of headings. Underneath Introduction, add a short paragraph about why you’re interested in this topic and what you’d like to investigate more about.Once you do that, you’re good to start looking at sources. And remember (check out the Assignment sheet!), you have to use four different genres – not all web news, not all videos, but a mix. You’re also looking for different perspectives, so don’t be afraid to analyse something you completely disagree with – you’ll get an insight into how they put their text together in a way that they expect will change your mind! Due Monday Oct 12 end of dayNothing on OpenLab.WATCHHere’s an introduction to the CityTech Library. It’s a series of little tutorial videos designed to help you navigate library research. Go to the main site, click on the thing you need help with, and the video will guide you through it – things like locating databases, articles, general research areas, etc. only.
