WELCOME!

Merry Christmas to all of you! I know it’s a few weeks to go, but this is my last chance to wish you a great Christmas. I hope you all enjoyed Series 9 also – and I bring you great news! Series 10 of Raven begins on 5th January on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Very soon after Series 9 – but we have a lot of Raven to get our teeth into!

In terms of Issue 21, we have a bit of a Series 9 special! Roy’s excellent picture on the Art Desk features Warrior’s Eye from Series 9, Dyrel is celebrated in both Warrior Feature and Poetry Corner, Series 9 challenge Ring Reach is in Challenge Feature, the picture in the Captions Competition is from Series 9, there are Series 9 top trumps, a Series 9 warrior wordsearch and my final views on Series 9! Phew!

There are also some other treats – including more of GeZ’s mini warriors, and this time it’s Series 2! They look so realistic – they’re great to look at. Don’t forget the continuation of Alaunus – where they have just found their new Ultimate Warrior and are returning to Alaunus. Also Lisa’s new story The Legend of the Lost Symbols continues. Unfortunately, once more I don’t have Lee’s RavenVision story and so it will not feature this issue. I don’t know when this will continue, but I am trying to blackmail it out of him as soon as possible. Only kidding.

We have a great treat this month as I interview all the warriors from the forum’s Raven competition – FeatherFest! Also, I look to see if having the water on your stomach actually makes you good at Deep Loch. And of course – we find out which is the most popular warrior of the four most recent months in Warrior Vote.

So what are you waiting for? Get reading!

Merry Christmas, and merry reading!

Ross Thompson

ART DESK

We really have a treat this issue – none of my artwork for you to endure! We have an excellent picture of Warrior’s Eye done on special software, submitted by Roy! Thanks!

About Dyrel

Dyrel actually didn’t have the best start! She lost her first few challenges and spent most of Week 2 in the middle of the leaderboard. But at the end of the week she performed well and went through the portal in first! Since then, there was no turning back and she continued to lead throughout all of the final, going on to beat Bertar by a whisker.

CHALLENGE FEATURE – RING REACH

DESCRIPTION

When I first saw Ring Reach in the Series 8 final week, I was reminded instantly of High Rope – just on water! That is basically what it is – walk along the rope, grabbing onto the dangly ropes in front of you and taking rings as you go. Fall off the rope and be swept away by the river and you lose. This caused me some confusion at first, as the warriors all had to sit on the rope and dangle your legs into the water to take one of the rings – but you didn’t lose by doing this. In Series 8 all three rings were required to succeed in the challenge, which means that dropping any seals your loss.

The challenge came back in Series 9, but this time you didn’t need all three rings to succeed – just at least one. And so most warriors just took one ring and left it at that, and you can tell that this makes the challenge easier with the risk on their shoulders.

In the Series 9 final week, the challenge had a makeover. It was a long way above the water, and instead of sitting on the rope they had to climb down a ladder to take the ring – exactly like Rope Reach from The Dragon’s Eye! And there was a chain this time, not a rope and once again they needed all three rings to complete the challenge.

RAVEN’S DESCRIPTION – TAKEN FROM SERIES 9 FINAL WEEK

“Warriors, cast your eyes upon Ring Reach – a challenge that courts disaster with every wavering step. You must take to the chain and tread the treacherous path above these fearsome waters. If you are claimed by the river, of fail to grab all three rings, then you will forfeit a precious life.

Tridic – as you are in last place, you shall be first to step into uncertainty.”

ATTEMPTS

FACTS

The success rate for Ring Reach is 75% - 4 out of 16 warriors have completed it. Interestingly, just one of those 16 warriors lost due to falling off the rope, which seems to be the obvious hazard!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Druan and Milex dropping the rings was quite memorable, as it was the first time we saw Ring Reach and it must have been awful for those two. Series 9 Week 3 was iconic too – as the challenge seemed a lot harder that week and all the warriors seemed to keep falling off the rope and fighting just to stay on!

WHAT DO I THINK?

I do quite like Ring Reach – I’m always a fan of ‘don’t fall off’ challenges. Although it seems a little bit easy when the warriors have to take at least one ring. Weeks 1-2 of Series 9 everyone completed it easily, and somehow in Week 3 it looked harder – maybe the water was faster? Or the warriors could have just been struggling. But anyway, making them get all three rings all the time would help make the challenge harder. I know they like to make it harder for the final which I’m all for, but it just seems a bit too easy when they only go for one ring. I’d quite like to see this challenge return in the future.

POETRY CORNER – DYREL

It is time for another challenge programme, written by me. This time it is about the Series 1 final challenge location – the Dark Pools! Enjoy!

She started the quest, standing tall and proud,

A spring in her step and on her stomach the cloud,

Although at Treetop Treasure victory was lost,

Her first life was the exacting cost,

But she put this behind her and on she fought,

Of the rings at Dead Man’s Gorge she missed nought,

Dyrel’s skills were starting to show,

But her life count took another blow,

She fought determinedly at the Ring Rack,

But the strength to beat Yercas she did lack,

She knocked off the first skull – victory seemed near,

But in Yercas’ favour the rack did steer,

On The Pendulum she sat, taking rings four,

But to move up she’d have to win some more,

The sun rose on the Forest of Fear,

With the demons below, danger seemed near,

But she listened well, and did as was told,

And her reward was a sixth piece of gold,

And at Raft Race – with Jenwin and Bertar,

Another ring – things looked good so far!

But Dyrel looked on with a heavy heart,

As she watched fellow warrior Wordac depart,

Next day she proved that she could swim,

And at Demon Square that she wasn’t dim,

She may have the eye with the arrow and bow,

But at Pontoon Pursuit she was too slow,

But still no lives were lost today,

She was back to winning ways,

At The Bridge she did swing,

Winning three golden rings,

Although she kicked herself when not using her brain,

The three rings at Leap of Faith kept her sane,

At Conundrum they ran out of time,

But at least it helps this poem rhyme,

She started the final day in last place,

And so began the final race,

Tree Rock saw a deadly mistake,

Hitting the demon had the highest of stakes,

At Thrall Forest she stood and watched on,

One small hit and Jenwin was gone,

At Target Mines a ring was won,

And at Ring Reach the prize was also one,

The Last Stand approached – Nevar was there,

Yet Dyrel escaped his evil glare,

She reached the final – it was done,

She now proudly displayed the sun,

Although she lost Ring Rack before,

This time her strength was more,

At Demon Army there were rings for all,

And at Pool Plunge the only one not to fall,

Forest of Fear returned once more,

Controversy seemed almost sure,

And although teammate Javmay was needy,

Reggos was also kind of greedy,

And in the end Dyrel had lost,

Her first life being the cost,

But once again they did deplete,

As Sunken Treasure they could not beat,

At Warrior’s Eye her lives were intact,

But on The Pendulum Japul’s balance lacked,

But this she did not resent,

For she kept her lead at Ladder Ascent,

And although Demon Square puzzled them all,

The Scramble only increased her haul,

Dead Man’s Gorge added another five,

But for the win she’d have to strive,

She won Treasure Ring, along with Tridic,

She discovered their riddle very quick,

And although at Thrall Forest her agility lacked,

Her lead was still intact,

Yet now only be a single ring,

Onto it she’d have to cling,

At Target Mines she had a keen eye,

But at Pontoon Pursuit she went awry,

At Ring Reach she added three rings to her sum,

And the time of reckoning had now come,

The Staff of Power was now in sight,

But Bertar wouldn’t give in without a fight,

They both battered the final gate,

But Bertar was slightly late,

She ran to the portal, holding her shield,

The Staff of Power she would wield,

She had done it – escaped safe and sound,

The Ultimate Warrior had now been found.
