FLAT NON-ROLL AND RIBBED NON-ROLL ELASTICS - Jo-Ann Stores
TYPES OF ELASTICS
WOVENS
FLAT NON-ROLL AND RIBBED NON-ROLL ELASTICS resist twisting and rolling. They work well in sleeves, waistbands and leg bands. The flat non-roll is used for light- to medium-weight fabric. Use the ribbed non-roll for heavier fabrics.

PLUSH-BACK ELASTIC is sturdy and has one decorative edge that shows on waistbands. The soft backing provides comfort next to the skin. This elastic is latex-free.
BUTTONHOLE ELASTIC is soft on both sides and has stretchable buttonholes spaced evenly down the center. It is used with a button to create adjustable waistbands on clothing. Simply move to the next buttonhole when extra room is needed.
KNITS
KNIT ELASTIC is soft and comfortable. It resists curling and will not narrow when stretched. KNIT NON-ROLL ELASTIC contains a monofilament that also resists rolling and twisting.
STRETCH LACE ELASTIC is soft and flexible. It conforms to the body, making it an ideal choice for waistbands and leg bands for lingerie and for making comfortable headbands.
SPORT ELASTIC is soft and flexible. It is often used in sportswear and sleepwear. The elastic is applied directly to the inside of waistbands by stitching through its four visible channels.
DRAWCORD ELASTIC has a built-in cord that can expand to twice the elastic length. It is the comfortable, suitable choice for waistbands on sportswear. The drawstring can be hidden on the inside of the waistband or pulled through to the outside for use.
BRAIDS
BRAIDED ELASTIC is the most basic type of elastic and is easily recognized by its horizontal ribs. It is lightweight and thinner than woven styles. It narrows when stretched.
SOFT STRETCH ELASTIC is lightweight with a soft stretch. It is used on necklines and sleeves where a tight stretch is not required.
SWIMWEAR ELASTIC is made with a cotton/rubber construction. It resists chlorine, salt water and suntan oil. The natural color distinguishes it from other types of braids.
BALLET ELASTIC is specially colored pink braided elastic that blends with ballet clothing and shoes. Use to create or repair the straight or X-shaped bands on ballet shoes or slippers.
CORDS
BEADING CORD ELASTIC is designed for stringing beads and for clothing where a light amount of stretch is required.
OVAL AND ROUND CORD ELASTIC (oval not pictured) can be used for buttonhole loops on wedding gowns. It can also be used to create gathers on clothing by zigzagging over the elastic on the wrong side of the fabric.

ELASTIC CONSTRUCTION
Elastics are constructed by braiding, weaving or knitting fibers together. The exception is clear elastic. The construction method and fibers used for each type of elastic influence the intended use of the product.
FIBER CONTENT Elastics are typically a blend of a stretch fiber (rubber or spandex) and a non-stretch fiber ? polyester, nylon, cotton, rayon or acetate. Each fiber has its own characteristics that influence the use and care of the elastic. Follow the care instructions on the package for each type of elastic. RubbeR is the most common stretch fiber used. It is chlorine-safe but can weaken and discolor from perspiration, laundering and exposure to light. Spandex is ideal for individuals who are allergic to latex. It cannot be bleached or exposed to chlorine, but is more resistant to perspiration and light damage. It will yellow with time. polyeSteR & nylon are shrink-resistant and can withstand washing, drying and dry cleaning. Body oils, salt water and chlorine will not harm them. Cotton is soft, comfortable and absorbent. It is chlorine-safe but can shrink when washed and dried. It cannot be dry cleaned. Rayon & aCetate have the least desirable characteristics. The fibers are weak and stretch when wet, so they must be hand-washed in cold or tepid water and allowed to air dry. Hot water and dryers cause the fibers to shrink. They cannot be dry cleaned.
THREAD ELASTIC is very thin for creating gathering, shirring and smocking on lightweight fabrics. Use this thread in the bobbin of the machine and sew multiple rows to achieve the desired effect.
CLEAR ELASTIC is thin and soft and blends with any color of fabric. It stretches 3 to 4 times its original length. It can be sewn through without destroying its elasticity, so it is a suitable choice for gathering fabric or stabilizing knit seams.

ColoRful Knit elaStiC
Elastic has traditionally been two colors, black or white, with a few exceptions. Now, 1" knit elastic is available in a selection of fashion colors.
The new colors can be used for functional applications such as exposed waistbands on clothing, holders on the sides of totes and bags to hold water bottles and for making headbands.
The colorful elastic can be used to create bows and other accent features on your garments for decorative interest.
