Essay Writing Checklist

Essay Writing Checklist

Use this checklist to assess your own essay

Introduction: Have you…

← Written a strong thesis statement - The thesis statement clearly and directly responds to the question (the words in the prompt may be used to formulate the thesis statement).

← Introduced your text, underlined the title and used a short descriptive phrase where you provide some details about the text. E.g. prose fiction novel, crime thriller, detective fiction, coming of age story etc…

← Included the year of publication (in brackets) and the author’s name (underlined).

← Previewed the main arguments that you later use to prove your thesis. Each of these main ideas are discussed in the body paragraphs.

← Written at least 4 – 6 sentences

Body Paragraphs: Have you…

← Written a topic sentence - The topic sentence is the first sentence of each body paragraph.

← Written your topic sentence as an extension of the thesis statement—each topic sentence should clearly prove and support the thesis statement and respond to the question.

← Included evidence from the novel to support your thesis – you should have at least two supporting passages/quotes (TQEs) from the text.

← Followed each quote with at least two sentences of analysis that explain how the quote supports and proves the topic sentence and therefore the thesis statement

← Written a strong linking sentence which summarises the paragraph and ties your discussion in that paragraph back to the question/thesis statement.

Conclusion: Have you…

← Restated the thesis statement (in a different way)

← Summarised the main ideas without being repetitive

← Expanded on the ideas in the essay, leaving the reader thinking and pondering

← Written at least 4 – 6 sentences

← Avoided writing “In conclusion…” but rather other summative words or phrases such as ‘In summation’, ‘Thus’, ‘Consequently’, ‘It is evident that…’ etc.

Other Important Aspects: Have you…

← Used formal writing style, tone, and language

← Avoided slang, poor expression, non-specific language, and contractions

← Avoided asking rhetorical questions

← Payed attention to spelling, punctuation, and grammar

← Proofed and self-edited your work

← Developed transitions to link your paragraphs and ideas. (Additionally, on the other hand, next, also…)
