Learning Outcomes

By completing this task students will be able to:

• Understand the nature and purpose of a resume.

• Examine a variety of resumes to determine best layout, content and style.

• Develop and produce their own resume.

Preparation and Materials

• Copies of Info Sheets (1), (2), (3) and (4) “My Resume” for each student (can be photocopied back to back).

• You may wish to prepare Info Sheets (3) and (4) as Overheads.

• Access to computers and a disk for each student if required.

• Blackboard/flipchart.

• Overhead projector if required.

• Students will need their Personal Education Plans with them, student planners, work experience reports, self assessment results etc.

• Rough paper for first drafts.

• This lesson has links with lesson plan “Extra Curricular Activities”.

Method

1. Put the students into groups of 3 to 4.

2. Explain the aims of the lesson using the learning outcomes on Info Sheet (1).

3. Display and/or give out Info Sheet (3). Go through the different sections. Ask students what they think of it – layout content etc.

4. Display and/or give out Info Sheet (4). Compare the layout, the content and the format.

5. Ask the groups to decide on an appropriate layout for a resume to include all the necessary information.

6. Give out and go through Info Sheet (1) and (2) with the class and stress the importance of the resume, how it needs to be well planned, meticulously scrutinised and well presented with no punctuation or spelling mistakes.

7. Give out Activity Sheets (1) and (2). Ask each student to write out their own resume in a first draft on Activity Sheet (1) and then suggest improvements and correct mistakes.

8. Suggest that students could use their Personal Education Plans, self assessment results, career file etc.

9. Students could word process their resumes and provide copies for their Personal Education Plans, career files etc.

10. Remind the class that it is essential to continually update their resumes.

11. Ask students what they have learned from the lesson.

12. Summarise the main learning outcomes.

As soon as you are about to apply for jobs or to CEGEP or college – it accompanies your written application

• Present your resume in a neat professional manner.

• Use good quality paper.

• Rearrange information to make it suitable for different applications.

• Include all relevant information.

• Keep copies.

• Include all work experience including part-time and weekend jobs.

• List all certificates gained e.g. first aid, sports awards or even if your just working towards them.

• Approach referees before including them on your resume.

• Always ask their permission before naming your referees.

DON’T’S

• Sell yourself short.

• Send your resume until you have checked for spelling and punctuation.
