Summary Writing... Is a shortened, condensed version of articles, stories, films, etc. to share the main ideas of the piece. Maintains the same tone as the original writer Does not include opinions of the summarizer

Summary Writing includes four major steps: Create a topic sentence (The IVF Statement) Copy the sentence into a real sentence Add a fact outline Write your summary using your fact outline (a graphic organizer is also included)

The three parts of an IVF statement (topic sentence):

Identify it... First, identify the item you will be summarizing.

Verb it...

Second, select a strong verb that conveys the purpose and tone of the item you are summarizing.

Finish it... Third, finish your thought with a broad statement which

depicts the piece.
