Show Self Control:

What is self control? How do we show self control?

Context:

Teaching in the classroom about how to show self control school-wide?

Introduction:

Scenario is either dictated or acted out by teacher demonstrating a lack of self control.

Teacher Model:

Reenactment or discussion about how the character could have shown self control.

Role Play:

Small group – receives or creates a scenario card which demonstrates a lack of self control and a solution to show self control and

then presents a 5 minute “quick skit” demonstrating both scenes from the card. Each group is asked to stage their skits in a

different setting in our school. (cafeteria, hallway, playground, restroom, carpool, bus area) If time permits you can take the

students to the different locations for them to act out their skits.

Example:

Skit 1: Waiting for the bus someone pushes past you to get on the bus first.

Skit 2: Waiting for the bus someone waits patiently in line for their turn to get onto the bus.

Review:

Discuss the ways that self control was demonstrated.

Practice Throughout the Day:

Ask students, “Is that showing self control?” in various school situations (find both examples and non examples). Point out

situations that demonstrate self control in settings and review concepts in all classes throughout the day.

Own a Positive Attitude:

What is a positive attitude? How do we show a positive attitude?

Context:

Teaching in the classroom about how to show a positive attitude.

Introduction:

Teacher helps students to brainstorms compliments that have made them feel good about themselves or would make them feel good about

themselves. Teacher records compliments on a chart. No compliments about physical attributes or possessions will be acceptable.

Teacher begins brainstorming session by offering compliments like, “You are a really good listener.” and “You are a hard worker.”

Teacher Model:

Teacher uses a large piece of paper to draw a hand. She chooses 5 compliments from the chart and writes one on each of the fingers,

demonstrating what the kids will be expected to do.

Role Play:

Teacher pins a hand on the back of each students’ shirt.

The following rules are in place:

Each student must write a compliment on 5 different hands.

Students cannot give the same person more than one compliment.

Only compliments from the chart can be used.

Students then move throughout the room writing compliments on the hands of other kids in their class.

Review:

Students return to seats and read their hands quietly to themselves. Volunteers can explain how the compliments on their hand made

them feel.

*Attach hands to chart and display in the hallway for all to see!!

Practice Throughout the Day:

Ask students to try to compliment one more person throughout the day, using the compliment chart as their guide.
