Essay Introductions, Conclusions and Titles: Conclusions

The conclusion of an essay is the final paragraph. It draws the essay to a close. Readers should feel that all the loose ends have been wrapped up and the point of the essay is clear. There are several techniques for concluding an essay. A writer can summarize the main ideas, highlight the most important issue, ask a question that leave the reader thinking, predict the future, offer a solution to a problem, or call readers to take action.

In writing conclusions, avoid beginning with the words, “in conclusion” or “as you can see.” A well-developed, well-written conclusion does not need those transitions to tell readers it is wrapping things up. Also, do not introduce a new idea at the end of an essay. Remember that the conclusion should give readers a sense of completion.
